Sonic's POV
I sat at the windowsill and watched the rain fall outside. Today is my 9th birthday. My mom died at birth and dad is at work. He's always working. He works at an organization called GUN and he's the best agent they have. My dad's name is Shadow. Shadow the hedgehog.
A crack of lightning shot through the sky and thunder was heard shortly after. The rain began to hit the window with more force and I sighed. I'm always alone on my birthday. Dad says that he'll be here to celebrate with me but...he never is...
I moved from the window to the couch, grabbing the tv remote on the way. I turned the television on and the weather forecast was shown.
"It seems that for the next three days, there will be heavy rainfall and lightning storms." I pressed the power button on the remote, turning off the television.
'Dad probably won't be able to drive home with the heavy rain...' I thought looking out the window once more.
Suddenly all the lights turned off. The power went out...perfect...just what I wanted on my birthday. I reach into the side drawer next to the couch and pull out a flashlight. I turn on the hand held light device and look around the room.
"Might as well go to bed since there's nothing to do," I say to myself.
I stood from the couch and walked upstairs to my room, using the flashlight to light my way. I was just about to close the door behind me when I heard the front door open.
"Sonic?" came a deep husky voice.
I run down the stairs and shine the flashlight on the person standing in front of the door. There stood a black and red hedgehog with four quills going up and two down with red stripes on top and matching colored eyes, soaked from the pouring rain. I smiled and ran up to my father, jumping up into his arms and hugging him around the neck.
"I didn't think you were gonna come home," I said.
"I made sure I was going to be able to come this time," my dad replied.
I let go from the hug and I look at my dad. I saw a smirk spread across his muzzle and became confused. I then noticed that my tail was wagging at least 50 miles an hour. I then reached behind me and grabbed my tail to stop it. Dad chuckled from my actions and said, "It's alright to be happy I'm home."
He then placed a gentle kiss to my forehead and held me closer to him as he walked upstairs. We went into my room and I was placed in my bed. Dad kissed my head again and said, "Get some sleep son. I have the rest of the week off so we can do whatever you want."
"But the forecast said that there's going to be heavy rain for the next three days."
"I know. But last I checked we still have those board games down in the basement. And we can play other games and maybe the power will come back so we can watch a movie or two."
I smiled and nodded, agreeing with my dad. He was about to get up from the edge of the bed when I jumped up and hugged him around the neck once more.
"Night dad," I whispered.
"Night Sonic," dad replied as he hugged me back.
Once we let go of the embrace, I snuggled back into my soft bed sheets as my father left the room. He slowly closed the door and red glowing eye were the last thing I saw of him. My smile remained on my face as I thought of all the things we could do tomorrow.
Together...
My smile widened and I closed my eyes for a good night's sleep. This was the best birthday yet. This time, I don't have to celebrate alone...
Night dad...you're the best dad I could ever ask for...
