The morning came with a sharp ping to the ears. Saraphina jolted up, the springs in her mattress crunching as she searched the pile of twisted blankets for her phone. Sitting up straight a thin white sheet falls off her head and landed on her knees. She held her phone tight in her hand. Her eyes focusing hard on the numbers as her knuckles squeezed against the plastic.around her knees. She held her phone tight in her hand. Her eyes focusing hard on the numbers as her knuckles squeezed against the plastic.
“Damn it,” the words slipped under her breath as she throws the phone onto the bed and stood up. Her arms stretched up as her shoulders and neck cracked lightly. Slowly she lowered her hands into her messy long hair. Allowing her fingernails to scratch against her scalp. Slowly she made her way towards her door, the long shirt she was wearing dropping slightly past her knees.
Opening her door the light of the living area of her school apartment was bright, the lights all on and the smell of bacon filled the room, along with smoke. Sitting at a small table, made for two. Were her roommate Amber was sitting. Slowly Amber turned, her arm hanging over the backrest.
“Good morning Saraphina! I hope you're hungry” Amber stated, overly cheerful for it being five, fifty-three in the morning.
Saraphina let out a slow sigh as she observed the room. Her eyes glaring at the spatula and pans hovering above the stove top. Even the cup of hot tea in front of Amber levitated itself up to her lips for her to sip it. While still looking at the magazine in front of her that magically stayed standing almost straight up. While still looking at the magazine in front of her that magically stayed standing almost straight up. The pages flipping forward on their own.
Saraphina walked over casually taking the seat across from her. “You are so lazy.”
“Hey, I got myself dress you know! I even made you all this food. You should be more grateful!”
Saraphina sighed as she lifted a fork that was sitting in front of her on the table. Amber, winked at her as she snapped her fingers causing a plate to fly from the cabinet hanging on the side of the oven. The spatula carefully places eggs, bacon, and pancakes onto the plate. A bottle of maple syrup flies from the bottom cabinet landing right in front of Saraphina on the table.
“We aren't supposed to be using magic for such meaningless tasks. If Headmistress Rosewood caught you-”
Amber cut her off with a wave of her hand the fridge and another cabinet opened causing a jug of milk and a cup to fly on the table. As the milk poured itself into the glass Amber spoke. “Oh give me a break Sara. If she got rid of me who would look after you? Now drink your milk.” Amber smiled. She placed her arms on the table and rested her head in her hands.
Saraphina looked down at the tall glass of milk and her eyes narrowed as she muttered. “I hate milk...”
“Drink it, or I'll dump it on your head.” The glass began to float as Saraphina swatted it out of the air and lifted it to her lips taking a decent size drink.
After a sickening gasp, she put the glass back on the table. “Amber please just be cautious. That won't keep her from punishing you, you know?”
Amber waved her hand slightly as she smiled genuinely. “Fine, Fine, but honestly I am just practicing. This stuff doesn't come naturally to all of us.”
As she spoke the pan containing eggs fell off of the stove in the middle of being flipped.
“Damn it!” Amber slammed her hands on the table as everything fell to the ground, landing up straight but causing a mixture of small clashing sounds through the kitchen.
Saraphina tried to hide her smile as she stuffed her face with a piece of bacon. In between chewing, looking down directly at her plate she spoke calmly. “Your concentration has gotten a lot better.”
Amber had gotten out of her seat and was slowly bending down to pick up the hot pan. “Are you making fun of me?”
“Not at all. Anyways I need to get ready for class.” Saraphina stood up, ignoring Amber slightly as she made her way back towards her room.
“Oh, Saraphina. About your test today. You should pass with flying colors! As long as you excel in one type of ability you should be fine.”
Saraphina didn't turn and look at her as she opened her bedroom door and closed it behind her. She eyed her room, lifting up her uniform that she had laid lazily in her computer chair. She let out slight nerves laugh... “R-right... One type...” She sighed, as she lifted her long night shirt.
A few minutes later Saraphina came out in a crimson jacket. Her long skirt, cut in the front which had black lacing but dragged slightly on the floor behind her. She wears a loose black shirt under her unbuttoned jacket. The sleeves of the black sleeves slightly covering her hands.
“Hey, Saraphina. You're really worried you won't do well, aren't you?”
“Stop reading my mind.”
“I can't help it, you are the easiest to read because I am always around you. Besides, you haven't learned to block me out yet. It isn't my fault! Look, Sara, Cheer up. You've been here a little over a year and are taking advanced classes and are two years younger than everyone else, still! Honestly, if you weren't ready your grandmother-”
“You wouldn't get it. I know I shouldn't complain, but... I seem to be able to slightly do everything anyone else can do, but yet I can't... I can't master a single thing! It's like I'm the joke of all trades.”
“That's why I am here with you. Look your grandmother just wants you to succeed, she wouldn't set you up for failure.”
“Yeah... I know. I should learn to enjoy myself here.” Saraphina turns away and mutters under her breath. “Where I have a little freedom.”
Amber shakes her head, but she has a small smile on her face regardless. “Oh goodness... The older you get the more bitter you become Sara. Seriously what am I supposed to do with you?”
Saraphina doesn't respond as she makes her way out of the room. Wandering into the hall she passed by various students. The striking difference between them was noticeable fairly quickly. Mostly due to the custom uniform, her grandmother had personally had made for her. Instead of the black skirts that the rest of the academy where she was stuck wearing a skirt that seemed to clean the floors as she made her rounds from class the class. The amount of uniforms and cleaning they took was rather annoying. The lace was constantly walked upon and needing repairs. However, despite how many times she would destroy the skirts, her grandmother just repaired them and refused to give her a skirt similar to the rest of the students.
As she walked, even students not from her classes lowered their voices. As if anything they spoke would go straight to the headmistresses ears and cause them to end up in some kind of trouble. Saraphina tried to ignore everyone as she walked into the class and lifted her head up with a large plastic smile. She sat in her seat and stared half blindly at the board in front of her.
As the sound of the grand-bell, hovering in the center of the school's courtyard rung a young looking teacher made her way into the room. Her short blond hair curled in towards her neck and ears. Placing a stack of books on the desk in front of her she smiled outward at her students.
This was Miss Grays. A former student at Rosewood who had graduated only three years prior. She was spunky and quick and thus the best fit for the most rambunctious class. Her magic abilities also helped keep herself and other students safe and helped her succeed as a teacher.
“Oh good, it appears that no one chickened out in this class. As I would assume from my top class. There is no need to fear, after all, it is only the first semester and this is just to help me get an idea of where your abilities currently progressed from last year. There are no restraints on the type of abilities you can perform, just remember that whatever abilities you showcase will be judged based off of known data collected from known magic users in the past. If you happen to show off a new ability that hasn't been seen, then your grade will be based on the practicality of that ability. Any questions?”
Yulisha Victoria Averson sat in the front row corner of the room, closest to the teacher's desk. She raised her hand high, in a quick motion, barely waiting for the teacher to finish her statement.
“Yes, Victoria.” Miss Grays motioned toward the girl.
Yulisha Victoria Averson was a very well off girl, her thick black hair had several streaks of silver and was pinned up with various ruby covered hair pins and clips to show off her wealth. Like Saraphina, her uniform was also slightly altered. Her shirt had many beads sewn into the fabric in patterns of flowers. Her sleeves were rolled up to her elbows as well. Another small way to make herself able to compete with Saraphina's custom made uniform.
“Are battle attacks allowed? I know that such classes are not taught here in the female branch of the rosewood academy. However, some of us do not possess the same, common magical abilities that can be used for women's housework. For example, as you and everyone else knows my abilities must be used on another to have any true effect.”
“You are correct Miss Averson. Rosewood Female Academy has not been allowed to teach fighting magic since the Academy was split into two facilities. However for this demonstration, as long as the ability is not life threatening I will allow it. There will be healers standing nearby just in case. Now if there are no more questions would you all please follow me to the isolation room.”
As the class began their walk down the halls, there was some light chattering between the students.
Walking down two flights of stairs and into the basement area of the school was a large room with black walls. The lights spread evenly within the room. Miss Gray entered the room first, however, she quickly stopped when she saw the elderly figure of Mary Rosewood, the headmistress of Rosewood female academy standing in the center of the isolation
“Lady Rosewood, what brings you here.” Miss Grays asked, a little off guard, as she had no idea that the headmistress would be observing her class.
“I figured I should see the progress of my granddaughter.”
“Ahh so that is your reason,” Miss Grays let herself relax a bit as she waved her arm for the students to finish filling in the room. Once everyone was inside the door closed and the room became completely silent. Nothing from the outside world could enter this room, nothing from within this room could be released. This was the only training room set up in the Rosewood Female Academy. It was set aside for personal practices and exams such as this one. After all, these rooms were made by top magic users and scientists alike. Any ability that reaches the walls will quickly vanish and leave no trace. Making it the perfect place to practice any dangerous abilities without fear of accidentally harming those outside.
“There is another reason.” The elderly women's gaze fixated on Saraphina, her face calm as she continues to speak, making sure every word sunk into the young girl's mind. “For the rest of you, this may be a mere grade. However, for Saraphina Rosewood, if she does not pass with flying colors, under my own grading system then THIS will be her final day within the Rosewood Female Academy's walls.”
