“There is another reason.” The elderly women's gaze fixated on Saraphina, her face calm as she continues to speak, making sure every word sunk into the young girl's mind. “For the rest of you, this may be a mere grade. However, for Saraphina Rosewood, if she does not pass with flying colors, under my own grading system then THIS will be her final day within the Rosewood Female Academy's walls.”
Saraphina stayed silent as the students around her began to gasp within their own sheltered circles, their eyes watching Saraphina closely.
Miss Gray tried to get a hold of the situation, however, she could see the seriousness in Mary Rosewood's eyes and knew she couldn't defy her wishes. “In that case, Saraphina would you like to-” She was cut off as Yulisha stepped forward.
“Miss Grays, sorry for interrupting. However, it is alright if I go first? I wanted to use Saraphina as my partner for my exam.” Yulisha grabbed a hold of Saraphina's right arm, causing Saraphina's eyes to widen, completely confused at the sudden friendliness. Ass the two made their way to one side of the room the rest of the student body huddled in the opposite corner.
“W-what me? Why?”
“You'll see!” Yulisha Victoria pulled her towards the center of the room. “Come on.”
Yulisha pulled Saraphina to a corner of the room “you stand there” Yulisha commanded her smile a bit too friendly as she turned her back to the girl and walked several feet away from her. Turning back towards Saraphina Yulisha's eyes scanned her opponent and then the rest of the silent room. “Alright, are you ready?”
Saraphina looked around the room. “Ready? I still don't know what you are doing!”
Yulisha Victoria smile widened, her eyes narrowed and she looked directly as Saraphina. Without warning, she opened her mouth and began to sing in an ancient tongue, taught to her by her grandfather. Saraphina quickly covered her ears as the pitch and frequency increased. Slowly becoming crippled with the pain she could barely open her eyes to notice that no one else was affected.
“Impossible! Has she really mastered her ability to the point that she can isolate her voice sound waves to only affect one person!”
“My ears!'” Saraphina yelled as her knees wobbled under her. Saraphina moved her hand away slowly, “Damn it, at this rate-” She could look down at the blood on her hands.
“Victoria that's enough! Victoria!” Miss Gray eyed them as she raised her hand and tried to break Yulisha's connection. Normally when Miss Gray used her most trained ability to cancel others magic powers nothing happened. In fact, everything would just stop, but this time a wave of static air pushed against Miss Gray's hand, visible to even an average human's eye. Miss Gray's eye's twitched as her teeth grinded together. Now she was holding her right arm up with the force of her left, the power of Yulisha's ability proving to be too much.
The magic tug of war rope snapped and Miss Gray flew backward her bottom hitting hard on the floor as she slid back a few inches before coming to a stop, her fingers red blistered with a slight sight of smoke and smell of burnt flesh. The teacher seemed unfazed as she balled her hand into a fist and hit it against the dark floor. “Damn it! When did her abilities become stronger than my own!”
Mary Rosewood took a slight step forward toward Yulisha. “Impressive, but annoying. Yulisha Averson doesn't even realize any of that abilities flaws. She would be completely useless on an actual battlefield. How worthless,” The elderly woman's eyes became trapped on her grandchild's face. “Yet Saraphina has no battle-” The woman became instantly silent as Saraphina proved her wrong once more.
Saraphina had removed her hands from around her ears. With a quick wave of a hand, almost so quick that even her grandmother nearly missed it she pushed both her arms forwards, palms facing towards Yulisha. With her hands touching, or most the thumbs she pushed them out the length of her arms. As she did this a large gust of wind was quickly felt throughout the room, and Victoria was pushed backward by an unseen force. Right before Victoria hit the wall of the room, Saraphina quickly pulled her arms back and took a deep breath. Even with her pushing back, Victoria's back still whacked against the wall with a thud causing the girl to lose her breath. It wasn't over yet for Yulisha though, as an unseen wall seemed to smash right into the girl's face pushing in her nose before disappearing completely.
Yulisha Victoria collected herself, her hand went to her nose and mouth, blood dripping from her nostrils, down her chin and now down her elbow. She uses the wall behind her to stand. Taking her time to regain her balance and started taking the necessary steps towards Saraphina. The room remained pin-drop silent.
Saraphina has lost her interested in Yulisha, Saraphina's head was far too heavy. The room spinning around her and no sound had returned to her bleeding ear drums. Falling to her knees Saraphina let out a long sigh, her eyes trying to focus on her hands in front of her, but her balance was completely shattered by Yulisha's screeches. Moving her hand over her ears once more Saraphina focused intensely on her eardrums the fresh blood that streamed down began to diminish within seconds of the healing magic Saraphina could perform. Although imperfect she managed to stop the bleeding and was finally able to hear her classmates breathing near her.
Now standing over Saraphina, Yulisha Victoria Averson bent down and grabbed Saraphina's jacket collar with both hands. Saraphina stood up willingly, her hands still over her ears as Victoria began to shake her with whatever strength she still had left. “You bitch!” Yulisha spat. “Were you trying to kill me?! Y-you almost-”
Miss Gray couldn't bare to watch the two anymore. “Shouldn't we stop this?,” Miss Gray turned her attention to Headmistress Rosewood. The Headmistress presence meant that Miss Gray was not the head authority in the room and thus couldn't actually stop anything without her consent.
“Not yet,” The headmistress didn't even turn her head towards Miss Gray before responding. Allowing her eyes to focus on the two students in front of her.
“Answer me!” Yulisha continued to shake Saraphina. Saraphina hadn't gained enough of her hearing to make out the words that Yulisha was yelling at her. With her hands still over her ears, she continued to try to heal as much as she could. Eventually, Saraphina closed her eyes completely ignoring the angry girl in front of her.
Saraphina's eyes were sharp her eyebrows low and lip tightened as she finally felt well enough to speak. The look caught Yulisha in her tracks forcing the girl to loosen of grip long enough for Saraphina to take a step back. At this point Yulisha was still yelling, her mouth moving quickly, but the words not audible for Saraphina. “Hu?” Saraphina muttered with a tilted of her head, her gaze still as sharp as a razor knife.
Yulisha stared blankly, “I can't hear you! What did you say!” Saraphina shouted, completely confused, sadly although she could hear the presence of those around her, her hearing wasn't any better than someone who's head was stuck under water.
Caught off guard and completely enraged Yulisha turned away from Saraphina. “Whatever,” the girl managed as she brushed her shoulder against Saraphina's before making her way back to the rest of the class.
“Saraphina? What exactly did you do?” Miss Gray asked with curiosity.
Saraphina looked away from her teacher, unsure how to respond. “Oh... Well... I-”
Mary Rosewood cut Saraphina off and continued to answer Miss Gray's question herself. “She figured out that she can make her magic physical. Without even realizing it she made an unseen amount of magic energy from within herself and directed it at Miss Averson. Miss Averson should be thankful that Saraphina pulled back before smashing her into the wall completely. The amount of magic she used could have easily killed her on the spot. Think of it as two walls clashing together anything in between would have gone splat,” Mary Rosewood ended her statement by clapping both her hands together to indicate the motion she was referring too.
Miss Gray turned towards Mary Rosewood with slightly parted lips. Her eyes darting back and forth as she tried to understand the information in front of her. “She used that much? But I couldn't even-”
“Exactly, it was more than you could sense because it was more than you possess Miss Gray.” The headmistress smiled as she took a step towards Saraphina.
“What do you mean? I couldn't have used that much energy. If I would have, I would be feeling the lack of energy.”
“What kind of monster are you!” Victoria shouted, now surrounded by her friends. One of the students had begun to heal her nose, the bleeding had stopped, but it was still bent and bruised from the impact it had taken.
“I'm a monster? I was just trying to protect myself! You were the one who went out of your way to use this test as a way to attack me. What problem could you possibly have with me!” Saraphina muttered the air around her began to pick up and the class could see her skirt began to flutter around her.
“That's enough! Saraphina will you hurry up and do your test. Regardless of the results, I have something I must discuss with you in private.”
Saraphina sighed and the strange force around her disappeared. Placing her hands at her sides she pushed them out slightly horizontally with her palms facing down toward the floor. Closing her eyes she allowed herself to concentrate as she began to lift off the ground by a few inches. Her levitation only lasted a few seconds before she lost concentration and her feet touched back onto the floor.
Miss Gray clapped her hands together and smiled brightly. “That was an excellent try Saraphina. I don't think I ever saw you attempt self-levitation.”
Saraphina's eyes darted to the ground as the headmistress stared her down. “Yeah, I-”
“Come along Saraphina,” Mary Rosewood's voice was so stern that it caused Saraphina to jump. Mary Rosewood didn't wait for a response as she turned away from her granddaughter and made her way towards the exit.
Saraphina continued to stay still, her eyes on the ground as she slowly put her hands into loose fists. “Head Rosewood... Am I... Well, you said if I didn't do well I was going to be expelled so I...”
“Yes, about that. I was going to wait until we were in private, but I suppose I will state it here. Saraphina Rosewood, you are far too young and naive to be apart of this school. Despite the high expectations I have had for you, you have been lacking in all of your classes. You are a complete disappointment and a failure to the Rosewood family. The Rosewoods will most likely just have to wait a few years and see if your distant cousin is more fit to be the head.”
“Head Rosewood I-”
“You have no right to speak back to me. Now let's continue this conversation in private” Mary Rosewood then with a wave of her hand caused the large door sealing them in the isolation room to open. She made her way out of the room first, Saraphina passing through an unwanted line of her classmates as she followed.
Saraphina avoids eye contact with her classmates. Everyone within the room stayed completely silent, only their gazes followed Saraphina until the door closed behind them.
