Despite living in a chaotic gangland, Alex spends her days pretty much the same as she always has; making mad science. Her immediate concern was completing work on developing a blood substitute to be used as an alternate food source. It takes a few years, but she finally cracks it and moves on to other projects involving genetics and cloning.

As you can imagine, her synthetic blood product is in high demand on the surface, and Eleanore takes over production and distribution because Alex can't be bothered. Ownership of the formula puts them in quite a powerful position, and Alex lives comfortably with unlimited time to work on experiments.

The only thing that takes her mind from her work are the few occasions when Neely comes to visit. She can never find the words to express her regret about how she handled things with Neely. She knows what she lost.
