It's said that the American Shorthair breed descends from kitties brought over on the Mayflower. The vast majority of cats in the US are mixed breed domestic shorthairs, non-pedigree cousins of the American Shorthair. American Shortfuses also seem to be very common! Can you say "mewclear" five times fast??
