Studying the map intently, I remained silent.
Hunh… He actually has a map! I haven’t been to a big enough village to get one yet, so this is a blessing in disguise!
“You could have mentioned that earlier, but okay…” I murmured, taking a step closer in order to memorize the finer details on the map.
Tilting his head to the side, I felt his curious gaze hone in on me. “What do you mean?”
I could almost hear the smile in his voice. “Nevermind.”
“In my defense, I didn’t remember until just now. And besides,” The smile I heard before now bloomed in full, “I know I can trust you now.”
My expression darkened as I turned and mildly glared at him. What is wrong with this guy!? I have done nothing for him to trust me!!
“If you continue to follow this path, you’ll find the exit.” With that said I stepped around him and continued down the path.
“H-hey! W-wait up!!” There was rapid shuffling before hastened steps approached. He soon took up step beside me. “So, where are we headed?”
I immediately stopped walking and slowly, very slowly, turned my incredulous gaze upon him. “We?”
He nodded, stopping a few steps ahead of me before turning to face me. “Yeah. You’re gonna lead me out of here, right?”
Despite the fact that he couldn’t see my face, I slowly raised an eyebrow. Was this guy serious? I just gave him directions! “Am I now?” He nodded once again. At this, I couldn’t help but smirk. Tilting my head ever so slightly to the left, I impassively said, “I wasn’t aware of this arrangement.”
He blinked. “B-but… I thought that, because you gave me directions, that you were going to help me by coming with me…”
“How very presumptuous of you.”
The desperation clouded his features. “B-but…” Seconds later, any lingering distress hardened into frigid resolution. “Fine. I’ll find my own way.”
Without another word, I continued on my way, heading deeper into the forest.
