“Kyo!” yelled Katie, running to the window only to see her friend spiralling into the sky. She clambered onto the window sill, ignoring the pain as the glass cut into her hands. A hand grabbed her wrist and she turned to see Ghost holding onto her.
“I am going to get my friend, sir,” she yanked her wrist free and leapt out of the window, snapping her wings open. A pain wrenched her shoulders as her wings worked against gravity and began to beat to keep her in the air. She could hear shouts and the sound of other wings joining her. Diago came alongside her, ripples of focused air emanating from his hands, sending him flying forward, his wings bent to make him more streamlined. He grinned in passing then sped forward to try and catch up with Kyo, who was still spinning upwards with fire on his heels. She could still hear his ecstatic whooping laughter. Flapping her wings harder, grimacing at the pain in her shoulders and back, she felt a sudden updraft of warm air. Keeping her wings wide open, she rose up on it, faster than she could flap. Looking below her, she saw Dae, his large mechanical wings spead wide open, also catching the updraft. He looked up and smiled slightly at her and she felt her heart flutter again.
“Ridiculously high and you’re still thinking about love,” she muttered into the wind, which howled about her the higher up she got.
