Today wasn't about supplies or food. It was about finding people. Giving them hope if they had none. So after we found Elise alive, Jacob's faith in this quest grew wider. I knew I would feel terrible if I said no to his idea of starting a community of survivors because I think he was trying to replace the group he once had. So after Elise said goodbye to her long gone parents, we moved on to the next person I thought to be alive. Since that person wasn't at her uncle's house in my compound where she lived, I assumed she was at her mom's house, but that was in Zango. That is far from Talatona. But I much rather go there than to the city center—since it was where most of the city's population converged, it was crawling with zeds. So Zango it was.
The drive was silent and peaceful, and the only sound that could be heard was Elise in the backseat still eating. Nothing meaningful happened on the way there. We saw the occasional horde following our cars as if they were capable of stopping it just like that—at least not in that number. The roads were piled with cars, but those were easily swerved, and since there was no real traffic we got there in no time. These apartment buildings were taller and bigger than Elise's, but as what happened before I knew where to go.
Once again we drove through the wickets and made our way to the right building. I parked the car, rolled down the windows and told Elise to stay inside since she was in no condition to be running around. I went to the trunk and took flashlights for myself and Jacob. I also took pocket-sized compact handguns, two all black M9s, a Px4 Storm Full and a 92SF R_22 all packed with suppressors—these were my favorites and let's not forget my two jumbo hunting knives and my metallic all black baseball bat with the once iconic three Adidas stripes. I chose to leave my katana at home. I found one just like Michone's from The Walking Dead, but it was black and not white. Once Jacob was equipped he came over to me, and I handed him a flashlight because we didn't know where the buildings energy source came from. I told Elise to stay put, but she was mostly entertained with all the food we'd gotten her.
We entered the building, and the smell of death hit us like a bus, so we pulled up our bandanas to our noses. There was power because the lights were flicking but taking the elevator was out of the question. We found the staircase and made our way to the eighth floor with no trouble, being as quiet as possible. Once we got there, I searched for her apartment. As soon as I found it, I took no time in knocking on the door. There was no answer, so I knocked again and again. But still, no one answered. I knew I couldn't get my hopes up just because Elise was alive.
Yoncé could be gone by now. She was a bright girl; I wished she stayed alive. I was wrong. If she was inside I wanted to take her out of her misery so; I kicked the door over and over until it flew open.
Until now Jacob hadn't questioned me, and I was thankful because if I did explain what was going through my mind, I thought I would sound pretty crazy. When we went inside, it seemed as though our minds were connected because while I headed straight for her room, he searched the rest of the apartment.
When I got to her room, she was lying on her bed. Strangely she wasn't decomposed. She was snoring quite loudly. This girl had me feeling emotional while she's out here snoring like a damn pig. I think not!
"Yo stupid, wake your fat ass up," I screamed while jumping on top of her.
"Can't a bitch get some sleep over here!" she screamed back, and we both started laughing hard. Jacob rushed into the room looking preoccupied, and his expression softened once he saw us.
"Jacob this is Yoncé, she's a very close friend of mine. She was the only person I went to look for. I didn't find her around my area, so I knew she had to be here, or she had to be dead. I didn't want to come here alone so thank you for making me come on this journey, I appreciate it."
"Hi, quick question if you're alive why you didn't answer the door?" Jacob asked.
"Yeah, why didn't you answer the door?" I was wondering the same thing.
"It's a dark world out here. I thought sick people were here to take me so I pretended to be dead and I fell asleep because I haven't been sleeping well," she said casually.
"Okay then let us get the fuck out of here," I said standing up. "Pack your shit."
"Can I drive?" she pleaded like a little child.
"Walkers didn't kill you, but you want to go outside and turn yourself into one of those. Hilarious!"
"Fine."
Jacob and I walked to the living room only find three walkers inside, each more decomposed and gruesome looking than the other. We wasted no time in killing them. The one on the left came at me, and I went Babe Ruth on her ass. I only realized the strength I had used on it when it fell and didn't move again. Cool. I was too busy fangirling over my brute strength that I forgot about the other two. When I looked up, they were already dead.
Yoncé was okay. That put me in an excellent mood. That girl has helped me so much I owe her my life, figuratively speaking, I mean.
Jacob and I plopped down on the same couch; having woken up early to get ready for this manhunt was pulling a toll on us. Waking up early really does break a person's, heart. It is terrible, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
"Thank you, Jacob. Thank you so much," I genuinely meant that.
"It's the least I could do after you took me in." I could hear his heart pounding on his chest. "You are different; I like that. I can't put my finger on it just yet, but you have something intriguing." When I looked up, he was smirking down at me.
"You're okay too—I mean, you're not boring either."
Bet y'all thought this would end here. Well no. There was one more stop we had made before we headed home. We went to pick up Lucious. He lived near me but I never really thought about anyone else so, my bad. He's one of those wealthy friends I told you about. He and some other friends were there when it all went down, and they've been living off his pantry. There was even a cousin of mine. My dad's brother daughter. So now it was me, Jacob, Elise, Yoncé, Lucious, Zaphire—my cousin—Jasmin, Christina, Kyla, and Joshua.
