This is the world of "CodeX" known from the Empire, linear maps are preferred but they know that the world is a globe and it's something alike as shown.
There is something over the boundaries? Of course, but over the Roman limes (frontier) there is only chaos and darkness, places where the worst creatures are hidden, and where the rebels 'magi' are exhiliated.
