I love that fourth panel. We have the benefit of Agent Sojac’s narration to tell us that she’s not used to meeting anyone as fast as her, but it was up to Mike to make Max’s face reflect the fact that he’s also not used to meeting anyone as fast as him, either. I think he did a great job.
Agent Sojac’s assertion that she’s “not landing any blows” is an example of the high standards she sets for herself. From her perspective, that kick to Max’s side with her knee in the third panel doesn’t count as “landing a blow,” because he shifted his position fast enough that she didn’t succeed in breaking his floating rib with her shin. But I bet he felt it.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, back when we introduced Max a few weeks ago: in addition to his appearances in Cannibal-King, Wallflower Assassin, and “Testimony of the Teen Ogre,” Max has also made a couple of stealth cameos in the Insurgent Otherworld serial novel on the Weird Luck Patreon site. He’s the mysterious character whom Ace calls by the nickname “Spooky.”
