At first, Mimi was supposed to be a parody of teenagers fused to their cell phones in the early 2010s, when smartphones had not quite completely taken over our lives...until I found myself, a few months after buying myself my first smartphone, roaming around Victoria Park, trying to find a power outlet tocharge my phone...I knew I had crossed the red line and became one of them!
Mimi was also supposed to be the feminine, giggling airhead facing smart, opinionated Beebee until I realized that that idea was 1) Overplayed, 2) Sexist and 3) Not even close to reality and I myself was proof of it! I'm a smart woman and I wear makeup, flowers in my hair and dresses all summer long. It's time to get rid of that old myth, pushed both by gender roles and old versions of feminism that a woman loses ten I.Q. points every time she puts lipstick on!
Both Mimi and Beebee are feminist characters...but but not angry women. Even though feminism and female anger are often confused for one another, they are quite different. It takes effort to stand up for yourself in a smart way in the face of injustice. Not everyone can do it but it doesn't take effort or smarts to be angry. Everyone is angry at some point and no matter your gender, it can make you feel in control once or twice but sooner or later, it makes a fool out of you.
