The character of Taco and the issues he embodies go back to a guy I was dating in 2012. He was originally from El Salvador and I knew the whole chihuahua=latinx character was cliche...but I just couldn't resist!!!
That being said, all the discussions I had with him about his experience as an illegal immigrant in the United States and the why he was seen by other people made me want to do better than to add another racist latin caricature...so I thought the least I could do was to make the character as complex as a possible and caricature myself with the same brush I caricature others...hence the french poodle artistic girlfriend, Frisettes de Courval, whose last names comes from the smug, high-class character of Lisette de Courval surrounded by more down-to-earth working class housewives in Michel Tremblay's québecois stage classic, Les Belles-Soeurs.
Good ol' Francisco was not to keen on his chihuahua caricature, but I still remember the laughter he burst into when I told him that the chihuahua had a french poodle girlfriend!
