It had been several months since Adam lost his arm in a car accident. He had been depressed, until a visit from a brain in a jar. Dr. Ceres, a psychic who lost his body to cancer, was the head of the paranormal research division of Seed Sower, the contracted security company that dealt with supernatural threats.
"We have a program you may be interested in, Adam. Meet us tomorrow at the headquarters and we'll get you worked in,"
The next day, Adam went. He changed clothes into a hospital gown, and laid down on a slab like that of the subject of an autopsy. They placed a gauntlet next to his elbow, and Adam finally understood. They were giving him a new arm!
The nurse came in. They tried a lot of techniques for the gauntlet to attach itself, visualization, phantom movement, and a few that Adam didn't even begin to understand. After about 30 minutes, the nurse shook her head.
"I'm sorry, Adam. I really am," she said with a sad smile.
Adam started to cry. He couldn't help it. Hot tears ran down his face. He clenched his fists. Wait, fists?
The gauntlet rattled, and then shot up and attached itself to his arm. It felt like a worm on a hook might. Then the pain was gone, and he was using his new arm. He leaped around the room, and danced.
The nurse was replaced by a bald elderly doctor with thick glasses, "We'll need to see you after school three times a week for therapy. After that you'll have classes with Mercy Greyson, the head of the Paranormal Defense Department of Seed Sower. Congratulations, you're now a deva,"
Later Adam didn't understand why he needed therapy. His new arm adapted perfectly. He did the exercises, but there was an awful lot of recording going on while he had the rehab. Scientists would randomly come into the room, jot something down furiously, whisper to the therapist, and then leave.
Adam was one of three devas at his school now. One was a chartreuse haired girl named Myria. Everyone whispered that she was a witch. She had a familiar named Tendog, a blue and black raccoon, or maybe dog, that followed her around everywhere. He was very rude and would do anything to get human food, often stealing the other kids' lunches. This made Myria very unpopular. Adam decided to befriend her. They were a little alike. After a few awkward lunches, Myria accepted him, and Tendog tolerated him, especially after Adam gave him some tuna salad. Tendog loved any kind of fish. There was a story of him cleaning out an aquarium at a doctor's office. Then a transfer student, Casper, a kid with navy colored horns, and ashura blood, joined their crew. It would be summer soon, and they talked about all their possible adventures. They would visit all the hot spots in Othello, have sleepovers, see movies, and otherwise hang out. Adam couldn't wait, but something in his heart told him this wouldn't be an ordinary summer, that there would be genuine struggles, and that he and his friends would have to rely on each other. He thought that was a lot of information for an instinct, and saw someone out of the corner of his eye. A blonde man in his early 20s. Adam looked away, and when he looked back, he was gone. There was only a grey feather where the man stood. Weird, but weird was the norm in Othello.
