Blitz threw the door to her house open, shouting into the darkness, “Dad!! We’re home!” and when met with silence, she walked into the living room confused. “Dad? Carl!”
Jim walked into the kitchen and pulled a note and an envelope off the fridge. “Says he’s gonna be worken tonight. Left us fifty bucks for a birthday dinner.”
That could get us out of the city... Take it and run.
Orrrr, Jim turned to Blitz and grinned. “Let’s get slushies.”
“Fuck yeah.”
As the two walked into the gas station down the street, they waved at the hipster looking college student, that worked there for as long as they could remember, and navigated straight to the back of the store.
When they reached the back, Blitz burst with excitement the second she could see the machine, darting towards it. “They have red, Jimmy!!” She cried, filling the largest size with the icy red liquid, before running past Jim, with a small smile on his face, to the register.
They always have red...
Yeah. Jim smiled, filling his up with the blue one.
The two sat next to each other happily in the parking lot of the gas station, sipping blissfully on their frozen treats. It wasn’t long before I noticed Blitz kept glancing over at us peculiarly.
What’s she keep looken’ at? I say, pacing around her suspiciously.
Jim looked up from his drink to Blitz and tilted his head quizzically. “You alright, Blitz?”
She jumped at his voice and looked at him sheepishly. “Oh it's...it's nothing Jimmy...It’s just...I haven’t given you your present yet and I was...was wondering when I should.”
The hell does that mean?
“Well I mean...you could just give it to me now. What is it?” Jim asked, equally as confused.
Her eyes went wide and her face red and she looked away, mumbling “Nothin’” as she started drinking her slushie quietly, returning the two to silence for an awkward amount of time, until finally she turned to Jim.
“Hey Jimmy....look at me.”
We turned to see her smile at us before sticking out her tongue. She grinned again before asking, “Is it red?”
It’s always red. I snort, annoyed.
Jim smiled. “Extra red.”
She giggled. “Now you!”
Jim decided to go along with her and stuck his tongue out. Which sent her into another fit of giggles. “It’s blue!”
Jim smiled, despite being completely confused. “Yeah I bet it is...”
She smiled for a moment longer, then her face turned red. She nodded to herself as if making a decision and mumbled. “Wanna make purple...”
“Sorry?” Jim asked, leaning closer.
Blitz stood up and sat herself on Jim's lap, looking into his eyes intensely, arms firmly around his neck. “Do you wanna make purple?” she said again, slowly and carefully.
“Oh...OH!” Jim said, her meaning dawning on him. “Oh...uhm...yeah...”
Slowly and awkwardly, the two made the biggest mistake in our lives, but the happiest of theirs. They kissed.
