And here we have the first mention of the Alaarn, one of the major species of the setting outside of Ask Laurence (which exists in a very larger, very convoluted universe). While Laura's explanation of the Alaarn is about the level a girl who slept through her xenobiology classes would know, it gives you a jist of what the Alaarn are.
