He didn't remember much, it seemed he had a terrible case of amnesia. He remembered simple things like how to speak and read but he struggled with more difficult tasks. Although he had no memory of anything before the room he was now staying in, he knew he must have had some other life, it was the only logic that made sense. He also assumed he had once had a name apart from the string of numbers he was now referred to as, 038. He felt very sure of these things, but he never asked about it. He never asked about his past life because he worried he would be told something he didn't want to hear. He rarely even talked to the men who gave him food and did check ups on him. He did what he was told and nothing else.
038s room was small and empty, the only thing in it was a bed so he tried to sleep as much as possible because when he wasn't sleeping he became extremely bored. He was asleep when one of the men in the white coats entered his room. The rumbling of the thick metal door opening caused him to wake. He looked around to see the man he knew to be called Dr. Clavery.
"Your being moved," Dr. Clavery said without so much as a good morning, although it was hard to say if it even was morning, there were no windows in 038's room.
"Ok, where are we headed?" 038 replied obediently. He ignored it when the men were rude, they were the only company he ever got so he tried not to complain.
"You'll see when we get there, now, follow me."
With that he walked away leaving 038 to hurry to catch up. They walked in silence through many winding corridors which also had no windows. After a few minutes of walking they came to a stop in front of a door much like the one in 038s room. Dr. Clavery opened it to reveal a room identical to 038's except with a second bed.
"Here we are," he said ushering 038 into the room, "have fun."
And then he swung the door shut.
038 looked around the room hoping for something special, apart from an extra bed and he was quite startled when he found it. There was another boy in the room and he was staring right at 038. There was a moment of silence while they examined each other. The boy was quite short, or perhaps 038 was just tall, he couldn't say. The boy had brown hair, brown eyes and wore a white jumpsuit just like 038's, it only differed in the numbers painted on the chest, where his said 038, this boy's said 037.
The silence was broken by the boy saying, "Hi, they call me 037, you must be 038, well it does say that on your shirt so I guess it's a bit obvious."
"Yeah," 038 began to reply.
"Why do you have white hair?" He cut in, then before he could get a reply he continued, "You're tall! I wish I could be as tall as you! Where were you staying before this? Was it nice? I guess that doesn't matter now since you're going to be staying here now."
"It was pretty much the same as this but I guess you're right, it doesn't much matter."
"It's going to be great finally having someone else to talk to, those doctors aren't much fun."
And despite the fact that he was already beginning to find him somewhat annoying, 038 replied honestly, "Yeah, I think it will be."
It went on like this for a while, 037 talking and 038 listening as he was told about 037's life since he woke up. He wondered how the boy managed to find so much too say considering how dull it seemed his life had been.
They quickly became very close, like brothers. It would have been hard for them not to be kind and tolerant with each other when they were the only chance at friendship they had. Despite this they were often silent, even 037. There was only so much to talk about when they lived their life in a single room. Even small things like check-ups in the small white rooms with all the sharp instruments became precious to them because it gave them something to talk about. 037 feared all the pointy objects 038 however didn't mind them, he knew the doctors knew what they were doing and they had never made a mistake yet.
