When Daniel and I were first introduced I was going through a seriously hard time in my life. I was learning to adapt to the city, and in a new school where I only knew one person. He was Maggie’s ex-boyfriend Jason. He was set up to babysit me. Well, not really babysit me, but to help me out when and if I needed it. Or more or less to keep and eye on me for Mags. I love her, but sometimes she could be incredibly over protective. Needless to say I survived my first year of college just fine on my own. Which, brings me to sophomore year, where I entered my major in animation. I went to a school of the arts.
Anyway, Daniel was the quite guy in class. Always super nice, and always with this guy Derek.
I hated them both…
No, not really.
I was just really jealous of their work. These guys had talent. I loved their art style, and the praise they got for it. These guys were going places. While my cartoons sucked. At least I thought so at the time. It was my own fault though. Instead of drawing and studying like I should have been I was busy skipping classes and partying it up with Maggie. Living my teen years. I have no regrets, and I always seemed to come through at the end of the year. There was good times to be had, and memories I’ll never forget. That however, is a whole other story I will share one day.
Back to Daniel. He was one of those people who always seemed to end up in my group for class projects. We had the same group of friends, and yet we hardly spoke to each other. We even got kicked out of US History together along with Jason. We were “bad students” who did not study for a pop quiz. I never went back to that class after that, and every time I saw that teacher we would just smile at each other there after. That jerk. Which, I am just going to skip to my senior year, because all the other stuff in between is history.
I was hanging out with two of my girl friends when Daniel’s name came up.
“So, what do you guys think of Daniel?” I asked.
They were walking me to my next train home when the question stopped them in their tracks. They slowly turned around with a look of surprise, and literally started squealing and jumping up and down.
“Oh my god!” Lesly screamed, “That would be perfect! He just got out of a seriously bad relationship! You would be so good for him!”
“Really?” I asked with caution, afraid they would explode again, “How do you know that?”
“Derek, told me.”
“Yes!” Sara said shaking her head.
“Then we could all have our animation boyfriends!” Lesly said excitedly.
The truth is we were like a family in our department. We all hung out together, and seemed to date with in the department as strange coincidence. I’m not going to lie, art school can be pretty cliquey. Once you are sorted out into departments, you are together for always and always. No, seriously I had a few classes near fashion, nothing against fashion majors; you guys rock! I just stuck out like a sore thumb.
“You, should totally do it!” Lesly said.
I smiled, “Alright!”
“This is going to be awesome,” Sara smiled.
Which brings me to where I am now. The last few weeks of Summer, before my senior year. Sitting in my best friend's office typing to a guy that has been sitting next to me for three years and I hardly spoken to until now. Just staring at the screen, wondering where to go from here. I took a deep breath and just typed.
Daniel,
Cool, how about we get coffee at the shop by school?
~April
“April!” Maggie yelled again, "I am telling you make him sweat!"
“I’m coming!” I yelled back turning off the computer.
