*Hailey's POV
Home sickness. It's a strange feeling isn't it? You're so excited to leave home and be a grown man/woman, living by yourself, not having your parents on your back all the time. But then, a few days, or so, later you start missing the heavy footsteps of your dad coming up and down the stairs, the sound of your mom singing along to the radio as she cooks, the pitter-patter of your pets paws hitting the floor as they walk from one end of the room to the other.
It's even worst when you feel homesick and you haven't even left home yet. When you know you're gonna miss the sound of your dad snoring from the room next door, or you and your mom telling each other dirty jokes while out for a run early in the morning. Even the feel of your dogs fur in your arms as he sleeps next to you and the heaviness of your cat sleeping at the foot of the bed.
I was still at home, packing my last box's. I'm leaving for college in three days. I'm gonna be living in a dorm with another girl. We're either gonna be great friends or terrible enemies. Either sharing things or stealing from each others stuff.
I didn't want my roommate to hate me, but honestly I'd understand if she did. I, personally, don't see myself as a very nice person. Well, to girl standards anyway. Girls say I act to much like a guy, I'm not into girly things (nothing to do with how nice I am) and I've only got one girl friend. My mom (also nothing to do with how nice I am). All my friends are guys, and I've only got two girl cousins so I grew up around sports, toy cars, boxers, video games, car fixing (my dad sees this as a life skill) and bro fists.
Now I'm gonna be leaving everyone behind for college. Yay....Great.....Don't wanna.....
I grabbed the wrapping tape thingy, dragged it over the cardboard of my last box, ripped it and let myself slump against the wall of my room. My bedroom door opened and in walked mom, her blond hair pulled back in a pony tail and an apron tied around her waist.
She was holding a plate of freshly baked cookies, smiling kindly "all packed?" she asked. I nodded as she sat down next to me, passing me the plate. I took one of the warm, chocolate chip cookies and bit into it with a smile. Another thing to add to the list of things I was going to miss.
She giggled "you promise to write" she said. I swallowed the cookie and laughed "yes mother" I saluted and she grinned. Her face suddenly lit up like she had just remembered something "sweetie, I was cleaning under your bed this morning while you were out and I found a shoe box filled with envelopes" she said, looking at me confused. My eyes widened slightly "did you open them?" I asked, trying to hide my worry "of course not" she scoffed "They must be those letters you told me about. The ones you and your crush used to write to each other when you were 7 or so" she smiled, not even questioning why some were black.
I forced a laugh "Yeah, I can't believe we could understand each others hand-writings. We barely ever spoke either. Just wrote" I smiled as the true memory came to mind. Oh mom, what I just told is so far from the truth "Can I read them?" she asked, looking hopeful. I grinned and raised my eyebrow "so you can discover all my secrets and how much I complained about you? no way" I laughed.
She went to my bed and pulled a shoe box out from under it "here" she slid it towards me and got up "I'm gonna be in the garden, got some flowers to tend to" she smiled and left my room. I opened the box and dug around a little. I finally came across a tiny figurine which I had received for my 7th birthday, from him. I smiled at the little chibi Grim Reaper. Seriously. The Grim Reaper, gave me a chibi of himself. It was wearing a little cloak and held a tiny little scythe. It is actually adorable.
I looked it over a few times, looking at it's tiny smiling face, the little skull by it's feet and transparent marble in his other hand. I turned it over and re-read the message carved into the wooden stand 'Happy Birthday Hailer'. When I had asked why he had called me that, he said it was half of my first name and half my last name Hailey Walter, Hailer. I like it.
I placed the figurine back in the shoe box and taped it up, making sure that it was closed properly. I placed it on top of the other box's coming with me and left my room to go downstairs. As I got off the last step I almost tripped over my cat as he ran past me, followed by my dog, playfully running after him. I also have a lizard. Guess their names. I dare you.
The cat: Castiel. We just call him Cas (supernatural reference)
The dog: Derek Hale. We just call him Derek (Teen Wolf reference)
The lizard: Harry (as in 'you're a lizard harry'). My dad came up with it.
I walked into the kitchen where Derek was standing on his back legs, front legs against the side of the counter. Cas was sitting on the counter above Derek with a smug face. Not really, but I could imagine him wearing one.
I made myself a sandwich and bit into it just as the doorbell rang. Placing the sandwich down, I walked to the front door, swallowed my bite and opened the door. "Crap" I heard myself say before I was grabbed by like, 20 different pairs of arms and dragged to the middle of the group so they could all hug me. I let myself get pushed around until I was finally released, standing on the grass of my front lawn.
Alright, I lied, there's only 3 guys. but that's still 6 arms all hugging me from each sides. The smallest of the three, Felix (he's smaller than me, hehehe), was still hugging me "please don't go" I heard him say. He pulled back to reveal his pouting face. The other two also looked like they didn't want me to go. Of course they were showing it in their own way but having know them for this long, I could read them almost perfectly.
"Oh come on. You'll live without me. Anyway I'll visit during the holidays, we can call and I'll send you all birthday presents. I'm not gonna die. Y'all are so attached" I wrapped my arm around Felix's shoulder, ruffling up his blond hair. He scowled and glared at me while I grinned at him "shall we go to the park?" Jared, the guy on the right, asked.
We all looked at each other, nodded and started to walk away before I paused. I ran to the front door of the house and closed it and then ran back to them, quickly texting my mom telling her where I was going.
I was walking between Jared and Freddie. Jared was a tall guy, about 6'3, and could look pretty terrifying with his dark hair, the scar on his eyebrow, lip and nose piercings and the tattoo on his neck. He was really muscled too but he was really just a big soft teddy bear (gives the best hugs too).
Freddie wasn't the opposite but he wasn't that close to being the same as Jared. He had silver highlights in his brown hair, some earrings, a tattoo on his back, he was about 5'10 (i'm 5'8), and wasn't as built as Jared.
Felix placed himself between me and Jared, wrapped his arm around my shoulder and somehow wrapped his arm around Jared's shoulder too, although I noticed that he was walking on his toes because of how small he was compared to everyone here (5'6). Felix was small but was a good fighter. His height meant he was lighter and faster so used his size to his advantage in fights. He also had piercings, like all of us, and tattoos, like the rest of us. He also told the best horror stories. It's awesome.
We reached the park and the first thing we all did was run for the swings. There were two swings and every time we came here, the first two to reach them got to sit on the swings while the other two sat on the floor. I slipped myself under Jared's arm and reached the middle swing an inch of a second before him.
He cursed loudly when the other swing was reached before he could even react. He plopped himself down inn the sand and gave out a long over-exaggerated sigh. Freddie smiled from the swing to my right and I laughed "better luck next time buddy" I said.
I watched Freddie pull a cigarette out of his pocket and light it with his magical fire powers. Kidding, he stole Jared's lighter. Something I really admired about Freddie was his amazing poker face. I swear so far he's only lost about 2 of all of our poker games. We've played a lot of poker games. He caught my eye and I caught a slight tug at the side of his lip "AHA!! You almost smiled" I exclaimed, pointing at him accusingly.
My outburst caught the other two's attention and they all turned to stare at Freddie. He rolled his eyes, gave a quick grin, cigarette still between his teeth then went back to his poker face "YAY!! best going away present ever" I laughed, swinging gently. Jared was sitting on the end of the slide "guys. Wanna hang at my place tonight?" he asked "If it gives me an excuse to get the fuck out of my house then hell yeah" Felix exclaimed.
I reached over and flicked his forehead. Felix may have been a tough and friendly guy but his family life was..rough, so we made sure to thank him as best as we could for his caring. As time went on, we stopped pitying him. He hated when we did it. So instead, we supported him and helped him whenever we could.
Our homes were always opened to each other. We were each others support and our own little family.
I pulled my phone out
Can I sleep at Jared's tonight? -best daughter
Sure. No drugs, or smoking. Tell the boys I say hi :) -mom
Thanks ma. Love you. Cya tomorrow -Best daughter
I put my phone away, about the same time everyone else did "mom says hi" I said. Felix shrugged "my bro says yo" he said, re-reading the message "or more specifically "I hope you all drown" he loves us all so much" we laughed at this. Felix's brother really dislikes us very much. "My dad told me to tell you he hates you all" (he doesn't) Jared grinned. "nah, mine tells me to drink safely and to tell Hail that she's his favorite daughter" Freddie muttered with a slight chuckle.
"Shall we go now?" Freddie stood up from his swing "yep" Jared stood up as well "we're picking up ice dream on the way though" I said, standing up "why? you on your period?" Jared asked. I laughed "nah, lucky for you guys. I'm not".
And so we walked to Jared's mansion, ready to crash in his basement. Of course we bought ice cream tubs, snacks, SKITTLES, and drinks. I also bought a sharpie cause don't except me not to draw on at least one persons face tonight.
