Marie and the Potato

Initially, the French peasants were hesitant to accept the potato. They associated root vegetables with starvation and "phlegmatic" disease. However, this changed when Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette wore potato blossoms in public. Pictured is the Dauphine with the flowers in her hair. It looks like her pouf was especially starchy that day!
