When they first met, Julianna always felt annoyed to Mellisa's kind nature. She was always used to someone calling her names, judging her by her slight obesity, being afraid of her, and bothering her to the point of Julianna attempting to use physical violence. When Mellisa first attended Orville J. High School, they met under an odd coincidence-
"Ooh, ooh! May I tell this one?" Mellisa interrupted the narrator, "I love this story, and I love telling people about my bestie." Mellisa jumped in glee as she look at the narrator while unknowingly bouncing her body up and down hypnotically.
"Mellisa, I think people might want to listen to the narrator tell the story," Julianna bluntly commented, "and I think we should calm down before we make the narrator have another fit." Mellisa looks at her best friend obeys, whilst also giving her a big hug to boot.
Anyway, the two met on accident when Julianna had been alone, sitting in the back of the school eating pocky and reading her usual literature. Mellisa, who was new at the time, wandered about and skipped all across the campus, wearing a baseball cap with the words "Happiness & Glee" stitched on while wearing a flowery t-shirt with suspenders and jeans. Not wanting to follow up on Mellisa's happy nature, Julianna goes and hides in the bathroom, and sits behind the door to finish reading. All was quiet and well until Mellisa bursts in to say, "Helloooooo, bathroom people!" to anyone inside, slamming Julianna against the wall.
"Huh?" Mellisa says as she hears the sound of groaning. She looks back inside the bathroom and looks behind the door who's seeing stars after being slammed by the door. Mellisa quickly helps Julianna up and is then pulled into a hug as she tries to lift Julianna off of the ground and onto her feet. Julianna shakes her head and sees who hit her, and pushes her off. Unphased by Julianna's rude gesture, Mellisa continues to meet and greet herself to Julianna.
"Hello there!" Mellisa exclaims joyously as she shakes Julianna's hand, "My name is Mellisa. That's with two L's not one. It's very nice to meet you, Miss.. Uhhh..."
"The name's Julianna, and I ain't no 'Miss', got it? And why are you even talking to me?" Julianna responded kind of rudely, which causes Mellisa to giggle. Julianna gets surprised at the girl laughing and says, "What are you laughing at?"
"I'm sorry, Julianna," Mellisa giggles more, "It's just that with that sweater on, you remind me of a marshmallow project I did in the third grade, and I painted it in black while giving it a face, some rope for hair, and a tiny black hat that I strung together and placed on its head." Mellisa began to laugh more after telling her that, causing Julianna to grab Mellisa and pin her against the wall ready to threaten her.
"Listen here you little plump-rose fairy, nobody calls me anything whatsoever, unless you want to go home in a body bag, ya' got that?" The dark girl threatened. Mellisa wasn't scared by Julianna, in fact, she reacted calming even after being thrown to a wall. The girl happily smiles as she looks through Julianna's anger and threats and looks deep within her eyes and sees something nobody else could see. Julianna, having her fist ready to deliver a blow to Mellisa's stomach suddenly notices Mellisa's smile and deep stare and slowly drops down her fist and asks, "What...? What are you staring at...?" Mellisa playfully teases, "Oh, nothing," and easily releases herself from Julianna's grip. Mellisa gently places her hands Julianna's cheeks, making Julianna get into a suddenly shock, and plays with them for a bit then walks away to find her first class.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Marshmallow." Mellisa says with a smile as she walks out of the bathroom. Julianna stands in shock and wonder as the last thing in her mind says, "What the Hell was that?!" It was an accidental day, but it surely was one that Mellisa loves to remember.
"I looked deep into her eyes and saw that she wanted a friend. But it took some time to get her to like me too," Mellisa reminded the narrator,
"Oh yeah... how can I forget?.... Each day she's sent me cards, flowers, given me hugs, passed me a few things to help with homework, and always waited for me. It's like she had some weird crush on me or something. I felt weird about it and I re-he-heally wanted to hit her," Julianna remembered.
"Oh, bestie," Mellisa says as she hugs Julianna, "The only love I know is the love of having my best friend." She presses her cheek on Julianna's causing Julianna to blush red.
"Get off of me..." Julianna retorts as she blushes redder and has a somewhat angry face.
"Hehehe, don't you remember the day we made things official with our relationship?"
"That sentence did not sound right at all..." Julianna speaks in her thoughts. Her real self responds with a sigh, "How can I forget...? It's especially the reason why I'm stuck with you anyway.... It all started one day when we were doing swim practice for gym period. The day was very-"
-Very sunny and bright. Many of the girls and boys were dressed in their school swim outfits as Coach Burgundun led the students to what swimming events they will be doing for the season. Mellisa, fixing her bangs into her swim cap and talking to Julianna.
"Gee bestie, isn't it nice outside for a swim?" Mellisa asks Julianna.
"Uhh... Sure... And I'm not your bestie," Julianna responded, feeling very self-conscious about her uniform. Because of her obese body, her suit is slightly skintight on her, making her feel as if she's wearing no clothes whatsoever. A few guys walk by and wolf whistle at Mellisa and Julianna.
"Hey girls, booties lookin' hot today," said a smug, perverted boy. Julianna angrily blushes while trying to cover herself with her hands while Mellisa looks at the boy with a smile, but no response. Julianna tries to run away and hide but is immediately called on by the coach to do a few dives from the diving board. She is then dragged to the diving board and looks up at how tall it is. Julianna gulps as she climbs up the ladder reach higher and higher and higher. Her anxiety begins to act up as she gets higher, up until she reaches the top of the board. Julianna looks down and sees all her classmates staring up at her. Cindy, who's standing right in front of Mellisa, comments, "Three dollars says she chickens out." Mellisa looks back up at Julianna and happily waves and cheers her on, "Don't worry, bestie! Just don't slip!"
"Yeah that is REAL HELPFUL, THANK YOU!" Julianna yells sarcastically, "AND I'M NOT YOUR BESTIE!" She walked closer to the edge of the board, looks down and thinks, "Well... If this kills me, I'd better made she nobody finds out my special stash." The plump girl shuts her eyes and begins to jump, and jump, and jump on diving board. As if karma wasn't bad enough, there was leftover water was on diving board causing Julianna to slip on her last jump and hit her head on the diving board as she began to fall, knocking her out cold. Everyone gasps as Julianna splashes face first into the water as she sank like a tank. The coach quickly blew his whistle, ready to save her, but is quickly stopped when Mellisa runs over to the pool yelling, "Juliaaannnnnaaa!" as she dives into the pool and swims to save her. The weight of the water plus Julianna's body weight was a huge strain on Mellisa, but she was able to bring Julianna out of the water and onto dry land. Many of the students surround both her and Mellisa while the coach yells for them to step back and give her space. Mellisa then proceeds to give Julianna a few doses of CPR, causing the big girl to cough out any excess water that may have been lodged in her throat before she falls back to unconsciousness.
"Bestie?" Mellisa says in a worried manner as she gives Julianna the heimlich to get any excess water out.
"She's unconscious from the blow, she'll need to see the nurse," Coach Burgundun explains as he and Mellisa lift Julianna and carry her to the nurse. At about 12 PM, Julianna slowly wakes up finding herself in a bed in the nurse's office. She jolts and darts her eyes around the surrounding area.
"Am... Am I finally dead?" Julianna questioned. A nurse heard Julianna's question and laughs, a second laugh can be heard right next to Julianna, causing her to jolt in shock. The second giggle happened to be Mellisa who sat next to Julianna's bed while eating her lunch. Mellisa politely waved while she ate a strawberry jam sandwich. The nurse walked over to say, "No, Julianna, you're not dead. But if it wasn't for your best friend saving your life, you actually would have. Bless her heart," as she gently rubbed Mellisa's head. The nurse then exited the room, leaving Mellisa and Julianna by themselves. Mellisa looks through her lunch box and pulls out a bottle of water and gently offers it to Julianna.
"I-I think I've had enough water for one day, thanks..." Julianna responds as she sat up and rejected the offer calmly. She then looks at Mellisa in both fear and wonder, questioning why that out of all of the other students in school, why did she come to the rescue? What was Mellisa's true purpose to run out into complete danger in order to save a girl that she doesn't even know? Was she a stalker? Was she a follower? What is it..? Julianna doesn't seem to know. The only question that she could properly spurt out was, "Why...? Why did you save me...? I don't even like you or know you that much...." Mellisa had nothing but a loving smile and then she climbs onto the bed and sits directly next to Julianna, causing her to look down, then look up at Mellisa with her eyes.
"What? You just gonna stare at me all day or are you gonna say something?" Julianna pondered bluntly, making Mellisa giggle again. Before she could respond, Julianna is then pulled into a loving hug. Unbeknownst to such kindness caused Julianna to blush as her cheeks turn very pink even while Julianna slowly returns the hug. Mellisa gently breaks the hug and looks into Julianna's eyes and speaks, "I know we haven't gotten much of a good start since we met. But I know you looked lonely and needed a friend. That's why I've been so persistent to talk to you each day."
"Wh-whaddya mean..?" Julianna asks while blushing redder.
"I mean that I know deep inside, you're not a horrible, evil, dark, emo person that everyone puts you to be. Even if you and I don't have the same preferences, I enjoy who you are and I want to know more about you. You're a beautiful person inside and out. And plus... Hehehe, I find your fat, chubby body pretty adorable," Mellisa explains as she gently pokes Julianna's body, "It's like a pillow or a marshmallow that one could rest on." Hearing a lot of these kind words from Mellisa causes Julianna to slowly break into tears. Mellisa sees this and quickly reacts, "What is it?"
"It's nothing..." Julianna lies as she wipes her tears.
"Please tell me. You don't have to lie." Mellisa says sweetly. Julianna sighs and begins to explain why she is who she is, telling her a lot of the moments of why she always resents people and keeps herself hidden. Through all of that, Mellisa's smile never disappeared. Mellisa only responded with a nod, showing that she's understanding Julianna's every word. Julianna then breaks down to tears as she feels very disgusted with herself and covers her hands as she silently sobs. Mellisa wraps her arms around Julianna and rubs her back as Julianna cries on her shoulder. Mellisa gives Julianna a loving, tight hug and says, "You know, we may be opposites, but I believe you and I can create a blooming friendship." She places her hand on Julianna's and holds it close, causing Julianna to blush redder.
"I.... I don't know... won't people get the wrong idea...?" Julianna asked.
"What wrong idea?" Mellisa responded in a cute yet confused tone.
"Eh..... Nevermind." Julianna replied, forgetting she ever brought that up, "So we're 'besties' now, I guess?" A cute, yet weird, sound emanates from Mellisa's mouth as her smile grows wider as her mouth opens and as she holds Julianna's hand tightly and interlocks their fingers together. Julianna makes a similar sound but with instead of sounds of glee, it's the sound "Uuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....." as if she's both intensely confused and a little afraid of what Mellisa is going to do next. Mellisa suddenly tackles on Julianna and jumps up and down while holding her and squeezing her happily.
"GACK!" Julianna yells as she tries to pry Mellisa off, "Uncle! Uncle!" Mellisa is too gleeful to let go of her now official "bestie" and decides to sit in the bed and cuddle with her for the remainder of the lunch period. Julianna looked at the cheerful girl whom has her eyes closed while cuddling Julianna. Her mind begins to speak for her.
"I owe her my life... If she really wants me to be her best friend... I'd better be able to fulfill that promise... I hope..." spoke Julianna's doubtful subconscious. In retrospect, Julianna is very happy that she now has a friend who truly respects and loves her for who she is, but much of her doubt filled her brain, racking her heart and her mind if their friendship will ever last, or will it spiral into chaos like many of her other dreams. Trying to make herself enjoy her moment of newfound friendship, Julianna gently rubs Mellisa's snuggly head as she looks at her adorable face. Outside of the window, the sun shined beautifully on the both of them, making Julianna do what she hasn't done for years... Smile.
That my friends is the story of how Julianna became Mellisa's Bestie Forever. It just goes to show you: "The best of friends can even happen, even if your friend in particular is your complete opposite."
"And that complete opposite can even make things in life more fun for you even when you both don't understand what's going on," Mellisa adds as she holds hands with Julianna and looks in her eyes with a smile, "Right, bestie?" Julianna sighs as she playfully rolls her eyes while having a small blush, then looks back at her and slowly nods in agreement with a smile to boot, making Mellisa giggle with glee as she continues to hug the one she will forever know as "her Best-Bestie-friend forever." Friendship, it's a beautiful thing to cherish forever.
