[REDACTED] security footage confiscated on 9/30/05 for the purposes of the investigation into AWOL agent Leona Ivalu. The location of the footage has been removed to protect civilians and bystanders who were harmed during the events that took place. The location is a retailer that one of Agent Ivalu's former colleagues worked at when not on missions.
A series of makeup counters is visible on the black and white screen, different angles showing the busy shop as people mill around. Children run between the booths, laughing as their exhausted mothers chase them and as fathers attempt to placate. The silence hides the relative cheer of the place; it is an easy-going retail chain and no one suspects much.
A figure makes her way through the crowd, a hood up over her head with sunglasses and a medical mask. Given the recent rash of influenza and other diseases, this is not unusual - people who have a need to keep busy and continue with their lives wear them to protect themselves and others from germs. This woman has been identified positively as Leona Ivalu by eyewitness statements of the event and by Agent Ivalu herself. When asked why she stepped in, she had no answer.
The agent makes her way past the cosmetics booths and walks through the crowd toward a line of hosiery on the wall, approaching a man stocking the shelf from a cart to his right. He smiles at her and embraces her; she returns the gesture stiffly and makes a gesture to the side. They step behind a display rack, which only partially hides them from another camera set in the department. The two banter at first, much like old friends; her shoulders are relaxed and her hands are in her jacket pockets, and he's making faces and clearly mimicking someone, perhaps a boss he dislikes. She laughs awkwardly and turns her head, looking past the display before looking at him again and lifting a hand to his shoulder, squeezing it. His face changes, becoming stony instead of open and he shook his head. When asked what she said, Agent Ivalu explained that she had asked if her wife had been in the store in a week or two - "it was Rachel's favorite," she said. The man was a store associate the two were friends with, a one Paul [REDACTED].
Agent Ivalu shrugs a bit and shakes her head, waving a small goodbye at Paul before turning to leave. She nearly makes it to the door before stopping, turning to look at some disruption from the other side of the room. Another camera has picked up what looks like a fistfight between a security guard and a man in a hoodie. The latter has been identified as Operative Elias Kaine. He was an Irish defector from the Irish-French war of 1987, and served under the Canadian Republic after turning over any information in exchange for a pardon and citizenship after he uncovered information that would have lead to a full-blown third world war. Agent Ivalu states that she and Kaine had butted heads repeatedly over the years, most recently being in 1999 over how Kaine handled the takedown of the [REDACTED] Empire.
Kaine finally breaks from the security guard and rushes over to Ivalu, grabbing her arm and pulling her outside. While it looks rough, Ivalu shows no hesitation and follows him outside.
Footage of the outside of the [REDACTED] is much blurrier and less clear; the two identified as Ivalu and Kaine are seen arguing briefly before one walks up the street alone and rounds the corner. The second follows shortly after.
Seven hours pass and Ivalu is seen entering the [REDACTED] again, one hand in her pocket as she pushes through the evening crowd. Paul is cleaning up a spill near the restrooms and looks up to greet her - only to be shot between the eyes and collapses. The customers nearby panic and flee, the scramble for escape knocking over shelves upon shelves. Kaine enters not long after, shouting at Ivalu as she rummages through Paul's pockets. She pulls something out and shows it to Kaine - in a half-written report found in Kaine's home and according to Ivalu, the item is a gun, government issued. Paul is not and has never been an agent of the Republic, and it is unknown how he acquired the weapon. Upon inspection of his home after the fact, we currently have in catalog more than twelve firearms and an improvised explosive device.
Flashing lights, colorless on the screen, begin to blink on the walls and the two turn to look outside. Police and first responders have arrived and Kaine grabs her arm, half-dragging her toward the emergency exit.
There is no record of their flight from the store, as Ivalu shoots out the security cameras in the fire escape stairway.
Tape End.
