The days started to pass by and I was doing the same thing everyday. Though I had someone to talk to because that’s what humans do, we make friends right? Her name was Bailey, she was in a class group lower than me. She had golden brown hair, that was slicked back into a tight pony-tail. She had inch-thick glasses and a crooked tooth that I couldn't help but stare at. She was very plain looking, just like everything else in this world, she seemed to fit right in.
“So what is it like to do the work you do. Having control of the city?” Bailey whispered from across the aisle.
“Well, I don’t really control the city. I just maintain it and make sure nothing blows up.” I say jokingly, shrugging my shoulders, thinking.
“Well, what if you could control the city, would you?”
I think about it, but I didn’t want to answer it and get in trouble. So I didn’t say anything because if I said no and she keep going she would have gotten in trouble or if we both kept talking we would have both been in trouble. I looked at her, she sighed and smiled, accepting my silence.
“Rune, can I ask you to do something for me? I don’t have time and its closer to your home then mine.“ Now she was completely facing me.
“What do you need me to do?” I do the same thing, facing her.
“I need you to turn this into the labs, my boss forgot to turn it into them and they need it tonight, so they can work on it in the morning. If you do this I'll buy you lunch.” She said, doing a little dance with her shoulders, pulling a package from under her desk. It looked like a giant envelope, with a small outline of what I assumed to be a flashdrive.
“Sure, I don’t see the trouble because it's on my way,” I say trying to convince myself.
Bailey smiles and thanked me, handing me the package. Without another word she turned back to her computer and starting typing away. I did so as well.
When the workday was over, I cleaned my desk. When the lights started going off, I took that as actually closing time, and I stood and stretched. I started to leave with the package in my hand. I head to the train station, and sit in the emptiest part of the train.
When the train gets Timland street, I get off. I start walking to the lab's address, that was written on the package. The Safety-Bots roll past me and I check my watch, realizing it was 9:30 P.M. already, they must be patrolling. I watch them stop someone trying to sleep on a bench. The homeless rate is very low because they put everyone in a home or ship them off the working hands of Algine, where they farm and mine.
I walk to the side of the building where the drop-box was. It was extremely dark, and I looked at what I presumed to be a broken street light. Rubbing my arms out of nervousness, I pulled out my phone and turn the light on bright. I squinted at the ground, trying to make sure I don't trip. I had my back turned and was about to put the package in the drop-box when I hear someone come up behind me.
“Been waiting for you. You're later then you said you were going to be. Thought you would have stood us up.” He had a deep husky voice but at the same time was smooth and sultry.
I spun around and saw a man who was tall and thin, but his the hoodie he had on had no sleeves, revealing slightly buff arms. He had white hair and blue eyes. He had black pants on and boots. He looked like he was my age as well.
In my stupor, I backed up, scared not knowing what to say or do.
“Not talking, huh? Bailey, we talked this morning why so speechless now?”
“I'm not Bailey...” I stumble, swallowing hard.
He glared at me and walked up close and looked at the package I was hugging close to my chest as if it was protecting me.
“You have the package. You said that you would be the one holding it. How are you not Bailey. Is this supposed to be a game?” He said as he grinned.
“No, I work with her, she asked me to give this to the lab.”
The smile dropped from his face and was replaced with anger. “She lied huh...? Well, when she was talking about knowing the lay out of the city she must have been pretending to be you. Sad you don’t know what you got into. Looks like you get to go for a ride.” He went to reach for my arm and I quickly back away from his grasp.
“No, I don’t want to go anywhere with you! I want nothing to do with this, I'm going home.” I start to walk away when I felt a surge of electricity run through my body and I opened my mouth to scream, but his hand clamped over my mouth, muffling me. He shoved what I expected was a taser more into my lower back, and I start to feel myself pass out.
“You're coming with me. You're not going home today.” He whispered into my ear just as I fell into unconsciousness, his voice still echoing in my head.
