Dear Hailey,
It's not that I do not want to tell you why you're having those dreams, It's that I do not know the cause behind them. I've been asking my reaper friends and they say that it might be because children are more aware of supernatural occurrences around them. I don't think that's it, but it probably is. I'll try to find out more for you. As for your friend, since I am assigned to your state, I'll most likely take care of her anyway, don't you worry, she'll be perfectly fine. Everyone in the underworld is nice, she'll have no trouble making friends.
Talk to you next month, I'm sorry I couldn't help more than this. Goodnight Hailey,
Lots of Life,
Grim.

*Hailey's POV
Freddie wouldn't look at me, he kept his eyes on the pavement at my feet, hair falling over his forehead. I grabbed his face, careful not to hurt him and forced him to look at me. I turned his head to one side, there was a cut on his left ear, I turned his head to the other side, scratches on the side of his jaw.
Pulling his right hand out of his pocket and lifting his left hand up I inspected his bloody and bruised knuckles. His right ring finger was broken but I don't think the blood on his knuckles was his. I heard running footsteps from behind me and turned my head to find Tyler running over. He came to a stop when he saw Freddie "Holy shit. The hell happened to you?" He asked, horrified.
I caught Freddie flinch and shook my head "Shut up Ty" I muttered. I wrapped my arm around Freddie's waist so he wouldn't even think about resisting going to my dorm and walked him all the way back in silence. Thankfully Tyler did shut up, but he kept giving me looks as if he wanted me to explain what was happening. I'm pretty sure Freddie caught him more than once.
Getting to the dorm we walked in everyone went quiet. Probably because two people left and three people came back. I looked at Tyler "Take him to my room" I said, letting go of Freddie, who hadn't looked up once during the whole walk. I don't think he really could though, his neck was probably hurting him too much.
"Guys. If you want to stay here you better be quiet. If not, I'm kicking you out" I threatened, following after Tyler. I walked into my room and threw the curtains open so we could see better, moved my messy blanket against my wall and made Freddie sit down "Ty, could you get me the medicinal kit and a wet cloth?" I asked. He nodded and ran to the bathroom.
I pulled my desk chair over to the bed and sat down in front of him "Freddie. What happened?" I asked, taking his hands in mine, being careful not to hurt him more. He slowly raised his head, pain drawing itself over his face "I don't know" I heard him say quietly "Adam and I were on a date. He went crazy. His friends showed up. Beat me up. I blacked out and woke up in my car, here" He said, his voice croaky, whispering some of the words when his throat hurt too bad.
I feel like all I heard was 'went crazy, friends showed up, beat me up' and slowly this rage started building up in my chest "Fuck school, I'm gonna kill him" I heard myself growled, standing up. Freddie grabbed my wrist as I reached for my phone to call the rest of the suits. He didn't have to say anything for me to know what he was silently trying to say.
I sat back down "I'm patching you up, then I'm driving you back and beating him to shit" I grumbled. Tyler came out of the bathroom holding a red box with a white cross on it, placing it on the bed he opened the untouched kit and together we worked to patch Freddie Teddy up. (I called him that when we were kids).
We must have spent over an hour on him and even though he barely said a word I spoke the whole time about anything but what had happened to him so he could take his mind away from those images. I explained to him why I was living in a dorm with two other boys, why I dyed my hair blue and also told him that I think Ty's twin sister might have a crush on me.
Ty looked really proud of himself, saying he set us up and stuff. I had to explain to him that I wasn't crushing on her yet and that he better calm down before his jaw formally meets my fist. After Freddie had been patched up he looked like he was falling asleep so I gave him my bed as an early Christmas present.
When Tyler and I came back into the living room everyone had left and Darren was on the couch flicking through the T.V channels. He must have been on his 7th beer or something cause god damn he had another one at his lips "Dude. Go out or something, you're depressing this whole building" Tyler said, walking into the kitchen.
Darren stood up and turned to face me "Who is he, Why is he in here and why did you guys spend like an hour in your room? You can't just bring some stranger into our dorm" He walked closer "Did you forget the whole part where you let five strangers into this place who all acted like they could beat me at poker cause I'm a girl" what the hell man?
"They're not strangers, they're my friends" he argued, acting like he was the rational one here "he's not a stranger either. He's my friend" I said, giving him my most bewildered look "That's not the same. You didn't ask me" he pointed at me like I was meant to be in the wrong "You didn't ask me if your dorks could come over either. I didn't argue with you about it though"
"Yeah but this is different"
"Oh yeah? How? We both let "strangers" into the dorm we both live in without asking each other. The only difference is that you brought in 5 perfectly healthy people and I brought in one extremely injured person" I sneered and he went quiet for a second, looking really angry "Oh my god. Will you guys just kiss already?" Tyler muttered coming out of the kitchen holding a buttered piece of toast.
I glared at him and Darren rolled his eyes "Ain't nobody kissing this bitch. I bet not even her own reflection would" he scoffed "I wonder how many years of bad luck you have from breaking every reflective surface with your ugly ass face" said lowly, crossing my arms over my chest "listen here you-" "Hailey" I heard someone say from behind me.
We all turned to look at my door and there stood Freddie, probably having heard the commotion. He walked over and stood in front of me, straightening his back so he stood at his full height, staring at Darren over my head. He was just a few centimeters taller than Darren but with his clouded and injured face he looked goddamn gigantic.
I'm so glad this guy is my friend and not my enemy.
He spoke with his damaged voice which just made him scarier "you got a problem bud?" He growled out and I turned around to stare at Darren with the same expression, crossing my arms over my chest again. Sure, since Freddie was there I obviously didn't look as scary but when he wasn't there, I could look pretty damn terrifying.
Darren held Freddie's eyes but after a moment I saw them falter. He turned his glare to me, shook his head angrily and stormed out the dorm, slamming the door behind him.
After forcing Freddie to go back to bed, Tyler and I hung out in the kitchen, putting all the beer and Monster cans that the guys had brought over. It's when we finally sat down at the island that I let my head fall to the tiles of the table, letting out the biggest breath I could "damn. That's a lot of air for one person? How d'you not explode yet?" Tyler chuckled.
I shook my head with a chuckle, my head remaining on the hard surface, not wanting to raise my head again "I hate being awake. The real life sucks" I grumbled "where would you rather be? Wonderland? Hogwarts?" Tyler poked the side of my head and I let it roll so it was now sideways and I could see him from the top of my eyes.
I shrugged "under the sea" I mumbled "shall I take you on a magic carpet ride then?" Tyler leaned his head on one arm, another toast in his hand. I swear it's like he's making those things appear out of nowhere "let it go kid, You've only got a friend in me" I grinned, moving my head so I could see him better without straining my eyes too much.
"oh well, Hakuna Matata" He leaned back but quickly grabbed the counter, having forgotten there was nothing to lean against behind him. After he got over the initial shock of almost falling off the stool, he grinned like an idiot and placed his head into both of his palms, his elbows placed on the counter "so. Since we haven't had much time to hang out, tell me stuff about you" he grinned.
I raised my head and placed my own chin on the counter "I'm not interesting. I grew up surrounded by boys, I was part of the popular gang in school, I'm kinda emo I guess, I'm attracted to boys and girls and......I like red....?" Tyler laughed when I finished "Not interesting? Dude. You were part of the popular gang. That's like the top of the top. I was in the nerd section. Not even, I was below the nerds. By the way, I can tell you're emo. You're like, emo on the outside but unicorn on the inside".
I laughed at the description and raised my head "Hey. Not all emo's are about being depressed and satanic rituals and being forever alone" "But you are forever alone" I heard Freddie's voice from behind me. I turned around so quickly I thought I would fall off my stool "OH MY GOD!!!" I shouted throwing my arms up in the air "What will it take to get you to sleep dammit" I crossed my arms and glared at him.
He lowered his head and I felt like I was back to doing my part time babysitting job, scolding 5 year old's who didn't want to sleep cause "Mom and dad always read me a bed time story" or "Mommy always gives me a glass of milk before bed" or "Daddy stays with me until I fall asleep every night" I love them but Jesus Christ kids are hard to deal with.
He mumbled something along the lines of "I can't sleep" and I let out the biggest breath I've ever held "sit" I pointed at the stool next to me and got up to make him a cup of hot chocolate. This guy is my age and I'm scolding him about sleeping. I rolled my eyes as I made the hot chocolate "So. You doing okay?" I heard Tyler ask him. I imagined that Freddie was nodding.
Once the microwave beeped, I pulled the cup out, put some chocolate powder in and turned back around, placing the hot chocolate on the island in front of Freddie, sitting down next to him "you good?" I smiled and he nodded, wrapping his hands around the warm cup.
We spoke a bit. More like Tyler and I spoke to Freddie and he answered with one word sentences. Like he usually does. The fact he's talking is good so I'm not worrying too much. He kept picking at the band-aid on his chin, only glancing up to answer a question or just to look at us for the hell of it.
I yawned and rested my head on the island again "dude. It's not even that late. How are you tired?" Tyler asked. I raised my head to glare art him "your female doppelganger" I glared. He nodded in understanding "yeah. She can live off 3 hours of sleep just fine. She stole my dorm key and made a copy" Tyler shrugged and I kept my glare on him.
We watched Freddie get up, place his empty cup in the sink and walk towards the door, only stopping to turn back to look at me "Night Tyler" I said, getting up and following after Freddie who waved a goodnight to him. Tyler ran after us, shutting the kitchen lights off behind him "You know you can just call me Ty. And also, he can sleep in my room" Ty suggested.
I shook my head "Nah. Thanks Ty but we're good" I smiled and let Freddie walk into my room "night" I said, pushing my door closed. Freddie crawled onto the bed and pressed himself against the wall. I got changed into my pj shorts, brushed my teeth and everything then told him to scotch over so I could fit in there too.
This wasn't the first time Freddie and I ended up sharing a bed. Since Freddie and I honestly didn't give a shit, we'd always share a bed when it came down to it at sleep overs. It was fun cause in the morning, whoever woke up first got to lie on the other person until they woke up. It was fun for me cause he's bigger than me but then when he lay on me, I felt like I was gonna turn into a pancake. He has quite a bit of muscles, that makes him heavy, I don't like having heavy things lying on me unless it's Derek (dog, chapter one).
Falling asleep, I felt myself floating around. I was in a dark space, not like a room. Even though I could feel something beneath my feet, I didn't feel like there was any depth or dimension to the place surrounding me. It felt like I was in space, without the stars, without the planet, without the sense of impending doom.
I looked around, unable to tell the up from the down and even though my feet were on a hard surface, It felt like I was standing on a rocking boat, yet I'm stuck to the wood like i'm a north end of magnet and the deck is the south end. I looked up and would have fallen over if I could have.
Two giant eyes were staring at me and still the deck moved left, right, up down, around in a circle, like it was trying to make me sick. The eyes were a bright, dark blue, two giant stars replacing the pupil, and stardust sprinkled over the eyelashes, the iris and the white of the eye. I was completely mesmerized, until the eyes closed and I was plunged into darkness once again.
