Bag in hand; bundled in his scarf, my owner was at the door looking once last time to what he used to call his house. His hand, shaking, lightly touched the still closed door. I could hear his breath barely breaking the silence, as he wanted to say something that just died on his tongue.
The last space ship was leaving tonight. Strangely calmed night, no fire, no smoke, perfectly clear sky outside, the moon shined over the now obscure city almost deprived of life. After all, we had never been considered alive.
“53IX” He finally spoke and looked at my optic, his other hand reached my shoulder plate. I could hear the uneasiness on his voice, his dark, tired eyes trying to hold back his tears. A whole life soon to be abandoned for the tiny hope of survival was reason enough to understand his distress… And even like that I was hoping him to stay with me until the end. “I don’t want to leave you, and you know it, yet it is impossible for me to do anything else but what I already did.-he lifted lightly my chin and shook his head- Promise me once again…Promise you will try.”
“Owner…” I replied trying not to sound as concerned as I feared to be, I didn’t wanted him to go. “We had never been on our own… Humanity created us with a porpoise that now will be pointless, gone…”
“I know, and I deeply sorry for what my kind is doing to yours… But I’ve created you for a bigger porpoise than any your brothers’ outside, I’ve upgraded, improved you for a reason… Please promise once more you will do it, you’ll keep online.” I felt his grip to grow stronger. “Promise me you will be fine and survive.”
“…” Could I promise it again? Static in my voice, I tried to do it, but with a deafening sound the door broke down and someone tore us apart.
I had no chance to tell him a single word when the military man took him from me. I rushed at the door looking at them while one firm grip grabbed my arm to prevent me running after. I didn’t have noticed when my legs had moved on their own chasing them. I just could feel my processor and my cooling system running as fast as never before; my feeling simulator system functioning without control.
“Please, avoid making the situation more difficult, civilian.” A big bot, militar-grade spoke with a low harsh tone. I knew he was just following orders. His optic looked at both humans while they were going outside where their transport waited. His voice made me slowly calm down. “We knew this day would eventually come, since those creatures appeared. It was just a matter of time.” He directed his head to me. His grip grew loose. I knew he felt the same, despite having just basic feeling system programed. He was afraid of what might happen after their leaving, of the unknown. “It is not our decision to make… We could do nothing but watch. We… have failed.”
I stood still, following his command, while looking where he was. I saw how my owner tried to grab his scarf as the wind blew strong for a moment, but there was no time for such trivialities, not when your life literally depended on it. The other human rushed him inside their transport, where a crowd of people anxiously waited for whatever it was to come.
Soon the vehicle was gone.
