This comic was originally posted on "Back to the Future" day, October 21, 2015, the day Marty McFly arrived in the "future" (from 1985). So it's a tribute. The fact that you haven't seen these characters yet (or their gazebo) makes sense when you consider they're (apparently) travelling in time.
