We wake up the next day to the sound of gunshots, screams, people frantically running everywhere and loud shouting. I jump out of bed from a calm dream and quickly run to the door to see what's going on. I'm still a little groggy, but I open the door and manage to take a quick look outside.
A man in military uniform runs past and fires a bullet at something at the end of the hall, but I move my head back inside the room and don't get to see what it was. Ruby joins me next to the closed door and asks me, her face frozen in fear.
"L-Lilly, what's happening?! I can hear guns... and s-screaming!" She slowly sits on the floor and starts hyperventilating, tears forming around her eyes. I sit down in front of her and grab her shaking hands, moving my face closer to hers.
"Ruby... please calm down. It's gonna' be okay, but something's happening and I don't know... what. Just please try and calm down!" She starts breathing slower and nods, a tear falling down her cheek. I run back to my bed and grab my boots from under it, quickly lacing them up and taking the knife from out of my bag. Amelia sees it and asks me, sounding bossy.
"And where did you get a KNIFE?!" I look up at her with a cold look and ignore her question, grabbing a smaller knife from my drawer that I got from the kitchen for Ruby. I walk back to the door and crouch next to Ruby, opening her hand and placing the knife in it, slowly closing her fingers around the handle. She looks at the knife and looks up at me, confused.
"Take it, please. We... might need them." I look at her terrified face and look back at the door sadly. I can hear children crying in the room, asking the older ones what's going on, somehow thinking that they'll know more than they do. I hear a fast knock at the door and wait for a second, trying to remember who knocks like that. I stand up and call through the door.
"Alex? Is that you?"
"Yes it's me! Open the door! Now!" I pull open the door and Alex rushes through, looking like he's seen a ghost.
"What's wrong?"
"Close it!" A second after I close the door, something heavy slams against it and growls angrily. The smaller children cry even louder and some even hide under the beds to make them feel safer. Alex pushes against the door with me but we can only just manage to keep it shut, fearing that whatever's on the other side will get in. I grip the handle of my knife and say quietly.
"Alex... when I count to three I need you to open the door and step away. This thing isn't gonna' go away if we keep the door shut."
"Do you know what you're doing? What if it gets you!?"
"Yes." I sigh "I've done it before." He nods and prepares himself to pull open the door. I signal for Ruby to move out of the way and she moves to a corner of the room, still crying.
"Okay, one...two...three!" We both pull the door open and the creature stumbles through, growling and waving it's arms at us. I move back and wait for it to get close before raising my knife and aiming it at it's head. I grab it's shoulder to stop it biting me and push the knife through it's eye and into it's brain. It falls to the floor, covering it with it's own blood. Everyone in the room looks at me shocked, some covering their mouths to stop them being sick. I ignore the "Oh my god!" and "What is that!?" comments and shout.
"Everyone listen to me! We need to get out of here, NOW! It's not safe here anymore! So grab what you need and follow me!" After a few minutes, I somehow manage to get everyone organised and lined up, a smaller child in-between two older ones to help them if something happens. I slowly open the door and lead everyone into the dark corridor.
"Okay, everyone be quiet, I know where we need to go."
