I didn't have a chance to count everyone that's with us, but there were fifteen in my room and a few extra from the room next to us that came with me. That's at least twenty people that I'm responsible for, twenty people that I could get killed. I try to push the thought out of my mind and focus on the task ahead of us, but I can't help feeling like I shouldn't be the one doing this.
We get to the end of the corridor and slowly turn the corner, our backs against the wall and everyone trying to be as quiet as they possibly can, despite how scared we all are. I can tell that most of the kids just want to run and hide somewhere until someone rescues them, but we can't know for sure if there even is anyone else left to rescue us. We reach a door just around the corner labelled 'Employee Exit' and decide that this must be our best way out. A boy that was walking behind me, I think his name is Adam, tries the door handle to no avail. It's locked. Our only option is to break it open.
"Be careful!" Alex whispers, knowing what I'm about to do. "It might lead some of those things right to us! I doubt it'll open quietly."
"I know. But what other option do we have?" I reply, looking down the corridor doubtfully.
He sighs. "You're right. Go ahead." I take a step away from the door and breathe in, lifting my foot up above my hips, and kick the door as hard as I can. It doesn't open at first, only shakes, but after another kick it swings open, revealing the clean corridor leading to the exit.
"Damn. I thought we'd need to break it open with a sledgehammer or something." Alex says admirably. Normally I would've have thanked him for the compliment, but I'm too preoccupied to say anything at the moment. I don't let anyone through the door until I'm certain it's safe on the other side, eventually walking through and waiting for everyone to follow me. I can see the trees and bushes through the windows at the end of the corridor, with a glass door next to them. There's no one here, not even any police officers or doctors trying to escape.
"Thank God!" A few people say from behind me, thanking me for leading them here. Just as we reach the door, we hear several growls from behind us, and see four of the creatures stumbling towards us, dripping blood from injuries all over their bodies. I don't know who it was, but someone pushes me forwards.
"See if you can defend us now!" It was the same voice from earlier, however, this time they spoke, their voice shook with fear. Alex stands next to me, raising his knife, and soon another six of the kids over twelve stands next to us, ready to defend everyone else.
As the first one approaches us, a girl with short blonde hair holds her arms out in front of her, almost wrestling with the thing to keep it away. As she does this, another girl with shoulder-length brown hair stabs it in its back with both hands around her knife and steps away. Everyone gasps as it doesn't even notice the stab wound and continues to try and eat the girl with blonde hair. I realize that in the panic, I forgot to mention that they only die if their brain is damaged, no other organs matter.
As the thing sinks its teeth into the girl's arm, the younger children scream and watch her fall to the ground, the thing on top of her eating her flesh.
