She slowly closes her eyes, lets go of my hand and takes her last breath, just as her heart beats for the last time. Three people start crying and one collapses on the floor, crying hysterically, tears pouring down her face.
"We can't leave her here, we've gotta' bury her. One might come and eat her." A tall boy with blonde hair says from the back of the crowd, with sad eyes and a hunched back.
"Who wants to carry her?" He asks.
"I will," Alex mumbled, scooping his arm under her legs and the other under her back, slowly lifting her up. Everyone moves out of his way as he approaches the door, one person smashing the glass so that they could fit through. He steps outside, breathes in the fresh morning air and places her on the ground, under a huge oak tree.
"We don't have anything to bury her with." Ruby points out. "Are we really just gonna' dig with our hands?" A second after she says this, the girl's eyes snap open she begins to sit up, looking around at everyone.
"Grace!" Someone with long black hair screams, wrapping her arms around her neck and sobbing into her shoulders. "You're alive!"
She had no pulse! How is this possible?!
"We all thought you were dead! Are you in pain?" Grace opens her mouth and releases a low-pitched growl, gargling and choking on something.
"Are you alright?" The girl with the black hair says, releasing her from the hug and placing her arms on Grace's elbows, a concerned look on her face.
Alex looks at me worriedly and whispers, "It's the same noise the dead ones were making!"
"Well, how can she be dead?" The girl hugging Grace shouts, overhearing us. Grace grabs onto the girl's shoulders and pulls her towards her, blood dripping out of her mouth as she screams madly, her eyes fixed on hers. I run to Grace and release her grip from Phoebe, pinning her to the floor by her shoulders with my knees, pressing down her forehead with my arm.
"What do I do?" I yell, wrestling to keep her head pressed down with both my arms. Everyone looks around at each other with blank faces to see if anyone has a solution, all looking scared and confused. I jump in shock as a knife lands in between my fingers, plunging into Grace's forehead. She doesn't move. I look up and see the girl who was hugging her clutching onto the knife, tears falling down her red cheeks.
"I-it... wasn't her."
"It must be how they turn into the zombies. They get bitten." We all turn to the voice and see the person that pushed me forward when we were being attacked.
"My name's Isaac by the way. Sorry... about earlier." I ignore him and get off Grace, bending down to close her eyes.
"My name's Carly." The girl with black hair falls to her knees as a fresh stream of tears pour down her face. Isaac bends down to comfort her, wrapping his arms around her. We decide to leave her instead of burying her because it would take too long without anything to dig with, but we wait for Carly to collect some flowers to place around her. Isaac finds a log for a makeshift gravestone, neatly writing her name in large letters with a pen he got from the reception.
"Right. Now, where do we go?" I think for a second, trying to remember somewhere I'd been before that could be safe for us. I can't think of anything.
"I don't know. I don't know where's safe anymore." I sigh loudly and pull my knife out of my belt, searching around us to check for any danger.
"On my way here I saw a huge ASDA warehouse that we could go to. It could be full of food!"
"Do you really think no one else would've thought of that?!" I snap, unable to control my anger anymore. I'm suddenly responsible for so many people that will blame me if anything bad happens. I'm responsible for controlling how many kids survive.
"Fine. We don't have anywhere else to go, we can at least have a look. How far away is it?"
"A few miles, not too far," Isaac replies, with his arms still wrapped around Carly.
"Good. Let's go."
