Maddison froze as the sound of a single gunshot rang through her ears. She couldn't move. She didn't know how. She finally let out a huge shriek as she watched the love of her life fall to the ground.
"No, no, no!" she cried out as she rushed to his side and lifted his head.
The shooter ran off and left the two of them alone. Crimson red bled through his gray shirt. His face was pale and his body started to grow cold. Tears overflowed Maddison's eyes and streamed down her face. With all the strength she could gather up, she carefully dragged him towards the wall where she helped him sit up. She held his hand to her cheek and looked up him with her sorrowful eyes.
"Just hold on..." She fumbled with through her bag and pulled out her phone. She dialed 911 and pressed the phone to her ear, not letting go of his cold hand.
She hung up moments later and looked into her lover's eyes. She squeezed his hand tighter as he hacked up blood from his mouth. He wiped the blood of his mouth with the back of his hand and looked at the crying girl in front of him.
"Lie to me."
Maddison stared at him, not knowing how to respond to his blunt request.
"L-lie about what exactly?" she asked in pure confusion with a hint of fear in her voice.
"Tell me you love me. Tell me you care. Even if you don't. Just lie."
She thought this was a joke, but the tone of his voice and the look of his face told her otherwise.
"Daniel...I do love you. I do care about you. And I promise you that's not a lie. H-how could you possibly think that it was all a lie?" she sobbed as she began to shake.
Daniel looked at her and tears filled his eyes. He was hurting her. He felt like he couldn't do anything right. Now, it was too late to make her happy, just as she deserved to be.
"It's because all I've ever done was hurt you! I've never treated you right! I'm so sorry..." Daniel bursted into a fit of tears, his shoulders moving up and down as he sobbed.
"Daniel...baby, listen to me." Maddison cupped his face and made him look at her. "There is nothing you can do that would ever stop me from loving you."
She wrapped her arms around him and gently pulled him into a hug.
"Thank you..." he cried softly, his tears dripping to her shoulder. "Can you promise me one last thing?"
"What is it?"
"Promise me that no matter what happens, you'll move on and live your life to the fullest. Please?"
More tears streamed down Maddison's face as she shut her eyes in sorrow.
"I-I p-promise..." she whispered.
"Good..."
He groaned in pain and lifted his head to look at her. With the little strength he had left, he cupped her face in his hand.
"I love you..."
Maddison sobbed louder as his body slowly fell into her arms. He closed his eyes and took his final breath.
"Daniel! No! Baby please! I still need you!" Her screams bounced off the walls but was soon silenced as sirens wailed in the background.
