He looks between the few outfits he has created, accessories included. Where he found half the stuff I don't know. When did I even have a watch? Is that even mine? Why does each outfit have a different belt? Does anyone even notice the belt? Even the shoes are different for each outfit! Why! Who notices shoes!
"Wear this one." Gavin throws what he considers to be ‘suitable’ at me. I do as he tells me to and change into it but, I hesitate for a moment, playing with the hem of my jeans before reminding myself that it's just Gavin.
Why he has to see me in it I'm not sure but I do not question him. I go to button the cardigan up but he swats my hands away. He even pats down any possible wrinkles and circles me like a hawk, eyeing me from head to toe. I stand there awkwardly, cheeks heating up, and regretting asking for his assistance.
"You look acceptable," he says with a nod.
"Acceptable? That's it?"
Gavin shrugs. "It's the nicest thing you have really. Wear that to the party Friday and attempt to dress better."
"What? Why? I don't dress badly!" Do I? Sure Gavin looks like he's walking down a runway everyday but one doesn't have to dress like that everyday, do they? That's just how Gavin is. He likes to look pristine because he's such a freaking girl.
"It'll make her think you're doing it for her, which you are. You have to get into her head," Gavin says, tapping my head with his hand. "She's going to think-" and he actually raises his voice an octave to speak in 'Katie's' voice, "-Oh is he doing this for me? He must really like me!"
I grimace at the voice that sounds nothing like Katie. "You sound nothing like her."
"That's not the point."
“Then, why did you do it?"
"Didn't I tell you to keep your trap shut?" He groans, rubbing his temple as if I caused him a headache. I roll my eyes at his dramatics. "Anyways, the great Gavin is helping you with your chick so be a bit more excited."
"Speaking of helping me," I say as I change back into my earlier clothes. "Why are you helping me? What's the catch? You want me to be your personal bitch for the month or something?"
Gavin removes his hand from his temple to rub his chin. His villainous grin returns as he says, "That isn't a bad idea."
My eyes widen. Shit. I gave him an idea! I should have kept my trap shut!
"But no," he says. I sigh in relief, actually placing a hand over my heart. That was a close call! "There is no catch."
"That doesn't make me feel any better. A month from now, am I going to find myself dead in a ditch or something?" If there's no catch that makes me feel worse. He can't be helping me out of the goodness of his heart. There is no goodness in said heart!
Gavin dramatically places his hand over his heart, feigning hurt. "What are you saying, Noah? I am a kind person."
I can't control the laughter that takes me over to the point that it brings tears to my eyes. Gavin narrows his eyes on me, grumbling something about how I'm exaggerating his bullying ways. After my laughter dies down, I wipe the tears from the corner of my eyes and say, "You are nowhere near kind."
"Whatever, I'm being kind now."
"I see that, but why?"
Gavin sighs and takes a seat beside me on the bed. He is staring at the floor as he shrugs and replies, "Because you've never asked for my help before."
"What?" Now that I think about it I haven't. There have been girls I have crushed on over the past year, but I never asked Gavin for help or advice. I could say it's different this time. I really, really like Katie. She's everything I've ever wanted in a girlfriend—pretty, nice, good grades, great personality, everything! "So? Did you want me to ask for your help?"
"Not particularly but..." The boy rubs, almost shyly, at the back of his neck and shrugs. "Since you did, it made me think you must really like this girl. I can't say no to helping my friend when he's honestly interested in her. I'm not that cruel."
"I see, so even you have a heart."
"That's pushing it. I'd like to think of it as more of momentary insanity."
The two of us laugh. Leave it to Gavin to detest the idea of having actual feelings. Shaking my head, I smile at my friend. "Thanks though...for actually trying to help a helpless guy like me."
"You'd fail without me."
I can't even argue with him, so instead, I nod and agree. "Yeah, I definitely would."
Gavin reaches up to ruffle my hair, an action that warms me.
Gavin doesn't stay much longer afterwards. He mentioned a few things like 'stop acting like a servant,' which I didn't really get. He complained about how I let the girls walk all over me rather than voicing my own thoughts and opinions from time to time. Sorry, after living in a household of women you learn to obey, but I made a mental note to work on that. He mentioned a few other things like being more confident and stop acting like I want to simply be a friend, show that I want to be more, which I don't totally get but I didn't ask.
After, he left I go back to my room to find the clothes he had set out for me. They actually are the best clothes I own and now that I look at them, accessories and all, they look really well put together. Of course they are, Gavin picked them out. Rather than putting them back in the closet I set them out on my desk for later. I'll wear some of these this week or on any other meet ups I have with Katie. I wonder if that's why he picked out so many.
I'll have to thank him properly sometime.
