As I suspected, I do not get a reply until Saturday afternoon around 1. I grab my phone after hearing it go off. "I'm assuming you had fun," I say into the receiver.
Gavin snorts on the other line. "When don't I?"
I chuckle and silence follows for a few seconds before the boy asks, "Did Junior come get you?"
"Yep," I reply with a nod though I haven't a clue why. He can't see me but I suppose it's habit. "He took Katie and her friend Talley home too so I owe him now."
"You sure do. Sorry about that, if you really wanted, you could have gotten the keys off me. I wouldn't have cared if you took it and brought it back to me later," Gavin says. I hear voices somewhere in the background, making me wonder if he is possibly still with the two from last night. The thought makes me grimace.
"Me? Drive your fancy sports car? I wish, but rather not risk putting a scratch on it," I laugh. Gavin has offered the car to me before. Hell, he tried forcing me to drive a past girlfriend around in it, but I always refused. He doesn't pay for it, which is probably why he doesn't give a shit, but it makes me hell-a nervous.
"Whatever, as long as you made it home ok."
"How sweet of you, mom," I tease with a grin that I imagine he knows is on my face as I say that.
"Shut up," Gavin grunts. There are more voices in the background and Gavin even excuses himself for a second to shout some profanity. I awkwardly sit on the phone, wondering if I should hang up because he's clearly arguing with someone. Before I get the chance to ask whether or not it'd be a good idea to continue talking, Gavin returns. "Hey, sorry, I have to go. Talk to you later."
I don't even have time to reply before he's hung up. I sit there staring at my wall with my phone pressed against my ear. Sighing, I slowly pull my phone away to gaze at the screen as it informs me that we were on the phone for a mere 4 minutes.
I was kind of hoping he'd stay on longer, ask me how things went or talked to me about last night. Apparently, he has more important things to do, like argue with whoever he's with. I toss my phone aside and remind myself that I'll see the boy Monday to tell him all about it or, rather, ask him about the party.
Should I even ask about it though? Should I pretend I never saw it? I feel like he doesn't want me to concern myself with it, but, as a friend, I should at least ask, right?
What if he’s in trouble? What if he’s getting involved with things he shouldn’t? As a friend, aren’t I meant to help? Am I allowed to voice my concerns or is that being too pushy?
I slump in my seat, my knee's hitting beneath the desk as my feet place themselves between the crack of the wall and floor. I grumble to myself over whether or not I should mention the pill, or the strangers that night. Eventually, I tell myself that it's fine to ask. It's fine to be concerned about someone whom I consider a friend. Even if nothing bad has happened, that I know of anyways, something could happen. I must voice my concerns rather than regret not doing so after catastrophe hits.
Monday rolls around before I know it seeing as all I did over the weekend was play video games with Junior, like we do every weekend. Monday morning I get to school and look into the class to see both Gavin and Junior have already arrived. I hesitate before walking over to say hello to the both of them. Junior gives me a grunt, which is more than what I expected him to, while Gavin sends me a smile and a quick wave.
He isn't acting strange, so he either doesn't care, or forgot that I saw him Friday night. I don't want to bring it up in front of Junior though, in case Gavin doesn't wish for him to know. I know that asking him about his private life makes this seem kind of pointless but…I don’t want to put out his secrets if he doesn’t want people to know. Does that make sense? I haven’t a fucking clue.
"How did things go Friday?" Gavin asks with his usual teasing grin and mischievous eyes.
"She got plastered and hung all over me so, I suppose, that means it went well," I reply, remembering back to Katie tripping all over herself and using me as a crutch.
Gavin snorts and asks in disbelief, "That's all? What's with you?" The boy rests his elbows on the desk in order to rest his chin atop his hands as he pouts cutely. "Never doing any of the fun stuff."
"Some of us find the relationship aspect fun," I sigh.
"By some of us you mean virgins, right?"
I kick towards the boy, who avoids it seeing as he's a desk up and over from me. Laughing, he looks to Junior and apologizes to lazy bum for having to have him retrieve me from the party. Junior grunts in response, mentions something about repaying him with food, and continues slobbering over the desk in his half conscious state.
I decide to bring up the party later, during our shared Math class where Junior is not present. Junior is very good at math and has left us to die alone in our ordinary math courses while he succeeds at life in advanced mathematics. I die looking at his homework, so imagining the class itself and the tests is an impossible feat for me.
English flies by with Katie at my side. She apologizes about getting too drunk Friday, though I assure her that it's fine. I didn't mind having her cling to me like her life depended on it, and in a way it did. She goes on to talk about a new shop that opened in the mall near by. I, being the nice boyfriend that I am, hint at being willing to tag along with her. Somewhere behind me I hear Gavin snort, "Nice move, dork."
I ignore him to continue smiling at the girl who squeals and agrees happily for the two of us to spend a day together shopping. I hate shopping, but if Katie wants to go I will tag along. I have some money on me from doing chores around the house and at my relatives while over break. I can afford to get her some things or at least pay for her to go out to eat. The bell rings, signaling the end of English so we all part ways save for Gavin and I, who head for math.
