For once in her life, Holland didn’t mind wearing white. Actually, it was making her excited, looking down at the light fabric. Maggie had helped her pick the designer, but it wasn’t just any dress.
The neckline came up to her throat, emphasizing the lack of sleeves. The bodice was shaped to her figure and covered in little pearls. The skirt was pleated, something they’d had to convince the designer about. When she spun, it twirled around her like a vortex, mixing white with baby blue.
“Something old.” Holland tapped her red cross, so prominent against the white material. “Something new.” Her fingers ran over the pearls. “Something borrowed.” She slipped on the long gloves Maggie had left for her. “Something blue.” She spun around, admiring the dress she’d never expected to wear.
A knock on her door pulled her away from the garment. Tia Jane was standing in the doorway, holding a camera. “I’m glad I could see this day.” She wiped a tear from her cheek.
“Me too.” Holland gave her mother a hug. “I never thought I’d actually be getting married.”
“Are you ready?” Tia Jane took her daughter’s hand and led her down the hall. Since she didn’t have a father, her mother would be walking beside her into the next chapter of her life.
When they reached the arched entryway, an organ started up. But, instead of ‘Here Comes the Bride’, Ryan had suggested ‘Where is Love’. The notes danced through Holland’s ears and she took a deep breath. Down the aisle, she could see Ryan waiting for her. Tucker, his best man, gave her a thumbs-up.
No more lying. Ryan had told her. If this is going to happen, it’s going to be real.
I won’t lie to myself, either. Holland thought now. I’ve been so scared to fall in love. But, now, it seems so simple. She stepped up beside Ryan. “I love you.” She whispered.
He took her hand. “I love you, too.”
The bishop started the ceremony, but Holland only half heard his words. She was busy thinking about their lives together.
