My relationship with religion is complicated. I know and can't ignore the horrible things the catholic church has done around me (Duplessis orphans, Residential schools, we find out about another pedophile priest just about every week, my mom taught me how hard we had to fight to keep the catholic church out of our unteruses, bedrooms and couples) but there is a place near Caraquet that I absolutely love! It is a mix between a church and a park that is called St. Anne du Bocage.
There really is a spring there that people say cures ailments. I never really believed in that but the discussion Sooky has with his mom in panel five is exactly the conversation my mom had with me at about age 5 or 6. Last july, I went back to St. Anne with my sister and Chloe and had the same discussion with her: Water is the source of all life! It is a sacred thing if there is one and that is true no matter if you are christian, muslim, atheist, pagan, buddhist, anything-ist or just plain atheist.
This is also a salute to indigenous people and groups everywhere from Standing Rock to Elsipogtog who know what it's like to fight for water while we take it for granted.
It might not be a surprise, but my day job is in a call center in the call center capital of Canada.
I figured I'd make a series with all the stories that came into my mind on slow days at work that I couldn't work in a story arc..
