The day after the girl left I was told more about the territory Argoris was in charge of, it was a vast landscape built around a volcanic area. As a human being in this area might have posed problems since there were parts were deadly smoke and predominated, but as a dragon, neither the smell nor the high temperatures affected me.
My parent Argoris advised that the only danger around these parts were the mindless lesser dragons who hunt in packs, but even then my fire breathing can easily deal with them. It would only be bad if I got careless and decided to rest near their nest since they are very persistent. This of course only applied to me as I was at the moment, now seven meters which were not even half her size.
“Above the mindless dragons are those that can form words or speech using a variety of growls or roars, they are around your current size and will be hard to come by if not called forth.”
I was explained by Argoris more detail about the dragons she ruled over, sadly I found out I did not have a cheat ability that would instantly translate the growls Argoris used as examples. But while I did not have such a convenient method I was able to retain the examples and use them effortlessly.
In short, my thinking process has greatly improved as a dragon compared to a human, and while that does not signify that I have become a genius it does improve the way I can process information.
An example of this is using computer processors would be that as a human it is almost impossible to multitask so it would be like having a single core which has a certain amount of gigahertz, as a dragon I could now use something like a quad core where my brain distributes information into different areas to be analyzed.
So now I can learn things easily, this of course only applied to the reigning dragons like Argoris and me who was her heir and an exact replica of the progenitor of the dragon who fused with the fire spirit.
That day ended with me sleeping in the second room after a meal was given by Argoris, it was the second time I could sleep by my own accord as before I was forced so food could be provided. This was a small taste of freedom since I was still trapped by the chains of destiny and I who was once a human desired to return to being one.
Morning of the next day came and I was ready to move as soon as the sun peaked out from the horizon. It was the first day I had to find food for myself but before that, I had to learn to fly. Until now they were more for decoration than anything since expanding them would be impossible.
I was guided to the edge of the cave to an opening towards the outside, the sun which was still rising used the clouds around it to create a palette of warm colors. I began flapping my now spread wings in hope of lifting myself from the ground which ended in failure.
Argoris who was beside me was explaining that we are not like the wind dragons who are native to the sky and whose bodies are built light to be in the air for days without rest. For us the fire dragons to fly we had to apply magic to our bodies.
Unlike my inbred fire magic which I can use instinctively without out thought (in other words one that my body creates), general magic had to be used. It needed to be created by me mentally and continuously. The magic, in this case, was weightless, I had to reduce my mass for my wings to be able to lift me from the ground.
With this new information, I began following the instructions I was given, closing my eyes and imagining my body becoming lighter. With the knowledge from Earth, I knew gravity was the force that pulled me towards the ground, so the image I had to create was a barrier around me which would remove that effect.
I failed a few times but with each time I felt a soothing sensation almost like when you take a few cups of alcohol and you feel your body relaxed, a disconnection of your brain with a sense of your body. I succeeded after around ten attempts to do a full-body coverage of the weightless magic.
It was a pain to keep it on constantly since I was still getting used to the multitasking part of my mind. The advice I was given was to keep that thought in the back of my mind just like walking and talking.
While I could now do the magic I had to stop thinking like a human to use my mind correctly to continuously place the magic in my body. So far it felt like I was swimming in a small pool which was my human self from Earth when an ocean was right in front of me.
I blame my conventional way of thinking I had to break the molding of my human self to be able to take flight. I did as I was told and placed the magic in the back of my mind and forced myself to move my wings, I finally succeeded raising my body from the ground at first a few seconds then minutes and finally, after staying in the air for five full minutes Argoris spoke.
“That’s it, you’re finally able to fly. Now take your time and get used to it since it’s essential for learning other more difficult spells. Hunt around this area but I will warn you don’t cross the forest to the west, try staying within the volcanos and find food close to this nest. I will head out for the day as I got unfinished business to attend to.”
With that, she exited before me using the hole from above instead leaving me alone to practice flying a bit more. Half an hour in the air was enough to give me the confidence I needed to depart from the cave.
