High above the city in the skies, Lyn rushes down stepping on invisible platforms as she lands on the ground in the middle of a crowd. Almost as soon as she lands a group of guards come and surround her staring at her and pointing out their weapons in a defensive shield. One recognizes her and signals the others as they dissipate and he turns to scowl at her.
“You know you’re not supposed to do that. You know the procedure for unknown objects descending from the sky.” He says glaring at her. “Hell, even Avis know not to fly down to the middle of the city.”
“I’m sorry, I was just really excited about something and I just kind of jumped into the air,” Lyn says nervously.
He sighs and turns away. “Well go ahead, you’re only a threat to yourself so it’s no danger to let you wander around.”
“Thanks, Lem!” She yells out rushing off.
“My names Lemmuel, not Lem!” He yells out as she runs off. “She’s way too excited, the Captain isn’t going to like the sound of that, cause that only means trouble.”
Lyn rushes down into main street rushing past store after store before making her way to a shop with a witch’s broom sign. As she opens the door, she sees a small girl sweeps away at the front picking up dust and putting it into a dustpan.
“How’s it going, Sammy?” Lyn asks walking up to the girl.
“Lyn.” She says with a slight smile on her face. “Sister Rayne is busy with the Mother right now if you want to see her you have to wait.”
Lyn sighs as she walks inside. “Well I didn’t expect her to be ready to go right away, so I guess I can wait.”
Sam grabs a chair and rushes up to Lyn handing it to her before returning to her sweeping. Lyn sits and Sam sweeps away, taking every chance, she can get to eye Lyn nervously as she tries to seem busy.
“If you want to ask me something then do it?”
Sam stops sweeping and rushes ahead. “What’s it like being an Adventurer!” She yells out excitedly.
“What?”
“I’ve wanted to know, what’s it like being an adventurer? The Mother said that at one point in the past she was one and I’ve been wondering what it’s like.” Sam says excitedly.
Lyn looks the small girl in her bright blue eyes and remembers that gaze. The same gaze she used to give any Adventurer that entered her own village. Unable to find the right words she turns her head away and stands and looks into the air at nothing in particular.
“Sam, listen the life of an Adventurer is a dangerous one. Filled with Monere and other dangers, it’s not one for the soft-hearted.” She says trying to sound wise.
Sam nods excitedly listening to every word that comes out of Lyn’s mouth with the excitement and fervor that only a child can have. As she talks Glenn enters the room looking at Lyn with disdain as she turns her eyes towards Sam.
“Initiate Samantha!” Glenn yells out enraged as she approaches. “You were ordered to sweep up this dust not listen to this girl’s drivel.”
“Sister Glenn, I’m sorry,” Sam says nervously as she reaches down and picks up her broom. “I’ll get back to work please don’t tell the Mother.”
Lyn glares at Glenn walking up to her and pointing her finger at her chest. “Glenn, that’s not fair. Sam just wanted to talk a bit, you don’t have to yell at the poor girl for being curious.”
“Oh please, what can you tell her about being an Adventurer, your wannabe,” Glenn says dismissively as she turns away. “You and Rayne’s little adventures are a major strain to the Mother, the both of you should learn to grow up and stop this childish….”
“And that is my report on Sister Glenn’s activities for the past week,” Rayne says loudly entering the room.
Following Rayne an older woman in a witch’s outfit with her long white hair sweeping across the ground as she wears a large smile on her face. The pair looks at the group as the woman reaches out and grabs Glenn’s shoulders.
“Now Mother listen it’s not…”
Suddenly the Mother wraps her arms around Glenn and brings her close. “I’m so proud of you Glenn, I had thought that you had wrapped yourself in another affair. But according to Rayne you’ve been very diligent with your studies.”
“Yes,” Glenn says nervously eyeing Rayne. “I’ve been working very hard, it’s been difficult.”
Rayne steps forward walking towards Lyn. “I would sit and ask for a demonstration, but I’ve made other plans.”
Rayne leaves the shop dragging Lyn out alongside her as she gives a wink to Glenn as she closes the door. Sam watches wide eyes as the two exit the store and Glenn rolls her eyes as the Mother waves them off happily.
“Now Sister Glenn, how about you show me what you’ve come up with from your research?”
“Um, yes Mother,” Glenn says nervously.
Rayne drags Lyn to an alleyway as she stares up at her with Lyn looking down nervously. “So, what did you come?”
“I wanted to ask you for some help!” Lyn yells out. “My rent’s due today, my renter’s going to kick me out, and my pay is going to be cut because I broke another sword.”
“So, you want to go on an adventure to find treasure because you think that will fix all of your problems. And you can’t go by yourself so you came to me?”
Lyn bows her head. “Please!”
Rayne rolls her eyes and smiles. “I’ll help you, I hate seeing you look so pathetic. But do you really think that will help?”
“Huh?”
“You were put into this mess because of your reckless adventures, do you honestly believe that going on another adventure will fix everything?”
Lyn lowers her head and turns around. “Rayne, ever since I was a kid I’ve wanted to be an Adventurer.”
“I know, but sometimes we have to let go of our childish dreams,” Rayne says coldly. “Are you still going to cling to the past like that? Or are you going to step forward?”
Lyn turns to look at Rayne. “I won’t ever let go of my dream. And I’ll keep going forward chasing that dream with everything I’ve got.”
“Alright, let’s go,” Rayne says happily. “If you have the resolve then you can do anything, I believe in you that way.”
Lyn smiles and rushes up to Rayne happily hugging her tightly. “Thank you!”
“Alright, alright. But what are you going to do about the whole sword issue?” Rayne asks curiously as Lyn let’s go.
Lyn smiles and leaps into the air. “Meet me at the gates and we’ll head out, I’ve got a plan.”
“Oh dear,” Rayne says as Lyn rushes away.
At the gates, Rayne stands around against the wall with Lyn leaping down to the ground with a sword in her hands and a smile on her face. She rushes ahead and runs into the forest with Rayne chasing after her concerned.
“What did you do?” Rayne asks.
“Stole a sword from the armory,” Lyn says as Rayne looks at her concerned. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to break this one and I’ll return it when we’re done.”
“If you say so,” Rayne says dryly. “I’ll visit you in jail when we get back.”
“Don’t count me out just yet!”
