Lunch time soon crept up, and Skye had no clue where she was going. A tap on her shoulder caused her to turn around, making her face a familiar boy that she had sat next to in History.
"Don't know where the canteen is?" He asked, grinning.
Skye chuckled nervously in embarrassment and nodded her head.
"Come on."
He grabbed her hand gently and led her through corridors until they came to a double door entrance. As soon as they entered, Skye cringed at the sight in front of her. In the middle of the hall, cheerleaders stood in formation, practicing multiple different routines. Skye always hated the skimpy outfits cheerleaders wore. She didn't hate the cheerleaders necessarily, but their outfits, she despised.
In one corner, short-haired girls and boys lingered, wearing mostly black, and in another, girls and guys alike sat at a table, with textbooks piled up in front of them, each one open on different pages. Two hands waving in the air broke her out of her trance, and she was forced to look at Abby, who was crowded around a bunch of girls.
"Let's get some food." The boy next to her said, leading her to the lunch queue.
As they queued up, a boy waving towards them caused Daniel to walk away.
"I'll meet you in a bit." He said as he walked away, leaving Skye to get her food.
As soon as she filled her lunch tray, Skye felt a hard tugging on her arm as she was steered in the direction of multiple girls whose faces looked caked with make-up. She instantly knew who was dragging her by the familiar scent of the designer perfume she had given to her; Abby. Skye wondered why she'd bothered to give Abby that for a birthday present; she hated her former, idiotic self.
If Skye could go back in time, she would tell her past self to stop being so blinded, but she knew that even if someone came to her now and said that, even though she wanted to, she would never act on it.
"So, this is Madeline, this is Maddy, this is Melanie and that's Porcia."
Abby introduced Skye one by one, pointing at each of the girls. Skye nodded and waved shyly, sitting down across from Abby, as the other girls had already swarmed around Abby, leaving Skye no space to sit next to her, Skye knowing fully well she would never remember any of their names.
Skye became aware of the conversations they had about Abby's boyfriend back home, and took a mental note that if she were to ever get a boyfriend, she would never become like that.
A gentle slam on the table brought Skye out of her thoughts, and she looked to her right to see that Daniel had sat down next to her, causing the girls heads to turn for a minute, but then turn back to Abby in disgust.
"Well, I guess I'm not pretty enough to join the gal group. Or maybe it's because my face is actually showing some real skin, and not cheap smelling-foundation." Daniel whispered to Skye.
Skye snorted and smiled to herself, knowing full well Daniel shared the same opinions as her.
"So you made a new friend huh Skye?" Abby asked.
Skye shrugged nonchalantly and nodded curtly.
"I guess." She replied shortly.
Abby plastered a smile onto her face and turned towards Daniel, to immediately start laughing.
"This was the best you could do. Seriously, Skye; a scrawny Asian dude?"
Skye glared and opened her mouth but Daniel replied for her.
"What's wrong with being Asian, Abigail?"
The other girls snorted at the name Daniel had called her, and whispered amongst themselves, as Abby and Daniel had a stare off, Abby noticeably angrier than him.
"Nothing, Daniel, but I'm just saying that Skye could have got a better friend than you."
Daniel snorted.
"What, like those jocks over there?"
He pointed to the table at which bulky boys sat with American football jerseys on, with girls surrounding them in pristine cheerleader outfits.
"Exactly."
Abby sat back in her chair and folded her arms across her chest, clearly glad her point had gotten to Daniel. Daniel snorted again, and stood up with his tray, grabbing Skye's arm so she stood up with him.
"Let' go Skye."
Skye picked up her tray and followed Daniel until 3 words stopped her in her tracks.
"I will tell."
Skye's stomach began to twist and turn, and Skye suddenly felt very dizzy. She felt liquid rising in her body, and before her body could react, she placed a hand over her mouth and rushed to the girls toilets, swinging the door open and emptying out the contents of her breakfast into the white, porcelain sink.
She was vaguely aware of the door opening and her hair being pulled back while she continued retching, until her stomach had nothing left to puke up. She washed her face, wiped her mouth and slid down the wall, as Daniel held her, whispering comforting words into her ears, just like another boy had done back home.
