Some folks have expressed confusion about Emily’s hearing situation, so I will try to explain it as precisely as possible here. She was born with a genetic disorder called Waardenburg syndrome, specifically Type II, which is characterized primarily by moderate-to-profound hearing loss and diminished pigmentation of the eyes and hair. In Emily’s case, the hearing loss is moderate, meaning that with a hearing aid she can follow conversations reasonably well, though not perfectly, especially when the person speaking is not facing her. She is capable of verbal speech herself, but very much prefers to use ASL.
