Here we see those two guys that were spying on Nic and Jay earlier. They are reporting to their boss, the owner of Cooper's Mine, Mr. Cooper himself. Remember how Nic mentioned to Jay how he thought she should get a job at Cooper's Mine so that she could live in one of his boarding houses? This is that Mr. Cooper.
(named after my 6th grade teacher who was the WORST)
So why is Mr. Cooper so interested in Nic's property and whether or not he has found silver on it? Well, there was a law at this time that if you find a vein of ore on your property the entire vein belongs to you, even if it crosses onto another person's property. So Mr. Cooper stands to lose if someone strikes a vein near his property, or gain if he gets there first.
13 years old and alone to fend for herself in the Wild West, Jay has already overcome great obstacles just to get this far. But the odds are still stacked strongly against her. What will be in store for her in the mines of Northern Idaho? Will she ever be able to free herself of the demons of her past?
Jay is a western set in North Idaho in the late nineteenth century. It is a story of perseverance in the face of sexual abuse, misogyny, and greed.
