The Kingdom of Laurëa: The homeland of the Saint Emperor, Valen an’Arrazza. He is the originator of the Laurëan dynasties, which include the dynasties of the four Ossien Kingdoms, two nations in the east, and one fallen kingdom. The King in Arrazza claims hegemony over these families. Their former king, Courë, was considered to be the greatest king in their recent history, defeated the upstart Kingdom of Mallanë and claimed their lands as a vassal state. He died without a clear heir, leaving his brother, Emereya, a man with little claim to the Laurel Throne, as King.
The Empire of Relenë: The "Emperor" Pahan of Relenë has claimed to be the successor to a predecessor empire to Valen's. They proclaim their title is Palatine Emperor, in direct opposition to the King in Arrazza and an eastern Emperor (who happens to actually live in the structure called the Palatine). Known for their martial prowess, due primarily to their paired warriors and honor code.
The Kingdom of Lenorë: One of Valen's many conquests was the rocky backwater kingdom on a godhead-forsaken peninsula to the north. It is in this backwater that Valen's best friend and general, Saint Relen, was slain. Fiercely independent, and resistant to the cultural influence of Laurë and their ancient enemy...
...The Kingdom of Mallanë: The northern march of civilization. Past their northern borders, the Rona sharpen their spears and raid. And beyond that, there is little of note in this vast, barren land. Mallanë’s symbol is the lion and it is exemplified by its King, Amellen an’Mallanë. A hostage of King Courë’s in his early life, Amellen came to power and was immediately confronted with coups and civil war. These experiences have honed him and his small army into one of the most feared forces in Ossien. He holds a claim to the throne of Laurëa in the name of his mother and adds his queen’s claim, Alinor an’Arrazza, to his own. And now his eyes turn south to claim the Laurel Throne...
How do good men become tyrants? Few could answer more honestly than Amellen an'Mallanë. And doubtless, he would say nothing.
An army marches across the realm of Laurë, under the banner of a Foreign King who has claimed the throne. The fields are aflame as the highborn burn their fields in his wake, fearful of his wrath. Armies fall beneath his near supernatural power. And the huddled people curl beneath their ruins, begging for a savior to free them from the Hungry Lions of King Amellen.
While they pray, two cloaked riders trot through the blackened and charred wheatfields to a smoking village on the border....
The Hungry Lions is a low fantasy story in the tradition of GRR Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" and Sharon Kay Penman's "Sunne in Splendour". It will follow a journey paved with good intentions and fraught with all-too human failings.
