The alarm goes off shattering the silence in the darkness of a small apartment. A light comes on, and the alarm is silenced. Then a cell phone rings, and the man sitting on the edge of the bed lifts it up to his ear.
"Kayden," The voice on the other line begins, the tone of the man's voice on the other line causes Kayden to pull the phone away from his ear for a second and he begins rummaging through the cluttered items on his nightstand for his pack of cigarettes.
"As you know, we have been working on a confidential project. I only had the finest of people working to complete the project and create the first Fully Operating Xperiment, and the test subject was unresponsive the last time we spoke. Well, that experiment has busted out of the laboratory shattering the glass wall and set the entire facility into flames. If it is smart enough to distinguish the difference between the illusion of a wall being there, and recognizing that it was glass underneath. It could be a potentially dangerous and cunning creature. It is dangerous to those that might encounter it. This must not get out that we are responsible for the actions this dangerous creature commits. Is that understood?" The man continues his tone low and he is almost whispering. Kayden holds a flashlight in his mouth, as he listens intently to what the voice on the other line is telling him.
"That sucks about the laboratory. But I am unsure why you are calling me at this time of the morning. It's 3 am and I assume it's important so how does the incident of the lab being set on fire, and this wild experiment escaping involve me exactly?" Kayden questions as he withdraws a cigarette from his pack and tosses the pack and the flashlight onto the messy covers on his bed. He curses under his breath as he begins to rummage through the drawer of his nightstand looking for his lighter.
"Kayden, this wild experiment as you are calling it needs to disappear and be wiped out completely. We are unsure of the damage it could cause once it figures out its abilities and if it learns to master them then it could potentially come after us. It has already murdered the doctor that was over seeing its care and injections, by burning her alive. If this creature gets into any of our communities. It could kill thousands, and then how would my business run more efficiently with all my clients being killed off !?" The voice screams in Kayden's ear, as he lights his cigarette after finding his lighter entangled in his sheets. Kayden rolls his eyes as the man rants and rants about this experiment. After glancing at the battery life on his cell phone, he sighs.
"Don't you have a whole shit load of qualified people to handle this kind of thing?" Kayden asks as he inhales the nicotine that his body had been craving from the cigarette he smokes. He can hear the man on the other end of line sigh and then the man continues his ranting.
"Yes, I have got people that should be able to handle this shit. But these unqualified bastards wouldn't be able to able to play Simon Says right, much less follow any correct order I give them. I don't believe some of them have enough intelligence to wipe their ass with both hands. My elite team members are already out on other assignments and this is your one shot Kayden, at being recruited into my elite team. You make this experiment disappear, and you'll go far, kid. Maybe even able to afford an actual home instead of living in that raggedy ass shack of an apartment you are living in now. So what do you say kid, do you want this assignment or not?" The man says with an obviously frustrated tone in his voice, Kayden bites his tongue to keep him from telling the man to go straight to hell and hanging up the phone. But he sighs, as he sits there exhaling the smoke from his cigarette into the air. He glances around at his apartment at the cluttered mess of papers he has lying around, covering his desk and most of his floor. The plastic over the broken window is the only thing keeping the cold air from slipping in and causing him to freeze from its wind chill at night. The dust on his television set across the room, and the piles of clothes he has lying around. He realizes he needs this, as a chance to move on to a better life and the kind of the money the man pays is outrageous just to people who work in the office for him.
"What exactly do you need me to do?" Kayden asks as he awaits the reply from the voice on the other end of the line. Time seems to freeze and almost stop as it takes a few minutes for the man on the other line to finally speak.
"Kayden, we just need you come down to the headquarters and sign some paperwork agreeing on your ability to take this assignment and execute it fully without any problems. We also need to start your first round of injections. You can't hunt one of these things, without understanding how one of these things think and move. Besides I think you will like the after effects of the injections once all three injections have entered into your blood stream. You will be able to enjoy your life much more simply." The man on the other line says, sounding pleased that Kayden had accepted his offer. The man on the other line awaits Kayden's response and once again Kayden contemplates hanging up and turning off his phone. He refuses to be just another experiment to this sick twisted man who is attempting to play God, with his life.
"I refuse to be one of your experiments. No amount of drugs you put into my system is going to change who I already am." Kayden states angrily as he takes a long draw from his cigarette.
"Kayden, are you honestly happy being just a plain old boring human? Nothing special about you and working a dead end job where no one notices you. You are just a nobody right now. But, with three simple little injections, you can be one of the most elite soldiers I have. You would be Special. Very special. Because no one else could be like you Kayden. These injections can give you things better than you could never imagine for yourself. Besides you need to hone the after effects from the injections before going after this experiment no one knows what it is capable of or what kind of damage it might cause to someone who isn't just as unique as it as is." The man says his tone is neutral, neither negative or positive.
Kayden is up off his bed and is pacing the floor, he is biting back his temper and anger at the man on the other line for saying such awful things about him. Kayden feels as if he is already special and doesn't need some "abilities-in-a-bottle" kind of stuff to make him feel better about himself. Kayden looks at the muscles on his arms, they are strong and he can handle himself pretty well in a fight. He glances in one of his mirrors at his good looks, and dreamy eyes that all the girls he has encountered in his life had seemed to fall in love with. He is already far from ordinary, he can tell that about himself. But he sighs again, as he contemplates what this job could mean for him and that he isn't financially stable right now. But is money worth sacrificing the very parts of him of that make him human? Could he really be extraordinary like the man claims or he just willing to say anything to convince Kayden that he needs this assignment? Kayden drops ashes from his cigarette into an ashtray on his nightstand as he sits back down on his bed.
"Fine. I'll do the assignment, but only if I get the choice in which injections that I receive." Kayden states, attempting to take control of this out of control situation he has agreed to. He runs his fingers through his unruly hair and exhales smoke out into the air as he takes a drag from his cigarette.
"Kayden, I wouldn't have it any other way." The man replies as he writes Kayden's name down in the log to the genetics and research department. Handing the log off to one of the research assistants with blue hair that has been standing next to him, the entire time he has been on the phone. The research assistant upon receiving the log with Kayden's name on it hurries back to the research department so they can begin their research and start mixing the serums to blood to create a new set of genetically altering injections, suitable to fit Kayden's body and blood type whatever they may be.
"I will stop by in few hours after I get some sleep to sign the paperwork and receive the first injection I guess. Will it be ready for this afternoon?" Kayden questions as he settles back in beneath his comfortable covers.
"It should be ready by then. Get some rest. I'll see you this afternoon." The man replies and he doesn't speak another word he abruptly hangs up and leaves Kayden holding his cell phone only hearing silence on the other end. Kayden puts the phone on his nightstand, reaches over and quickly turns off the light. He rolls over and begins to try to get back to sleep, the only light in the room is the one coming from the alarm clock.
Kayden snuggles up to the strange naked girl next to him who's name he can't remember from the night before. The girl shivers when he puts his arms around her then she gets settled softly into his arms and slips into a heavy sleep than the one she was in just minutes before. Kayden looks at her and then rolls away from her removing his arms from around her knowing she is just another face and another name he won't remember by the time he wakes up. That's all any of the women he brings home are, just nameless meaningless faces he places beside him to try to make himself feel less lonely. He doesn't bring home very many girls at all because none of them have enough spark for him to bring home and the ones that do, get less interesting come the morning light.
He yawns and closes his eyes, completely unaware of what awaits him at the headquarters and what new interesting abilities this injection will bring into his life. He doesn't know that this assignment, is one the assignment will change him completely in ways he never thought anyone could be changed. But for now, he settles into his bed with a stranger temporarily fixing the loneliness that seems to plague him on the mornings he wakes up alone.
A pair of headlights press against the thickness of the fog, and the sound of an engine driving down a long dead street, with the radio blaring is all that can be heard for miles. Kayden cranks up the stereo so loud, that the speakers in his beat-up truck almost vibrate right out their place. His sunglasses cover his eyes, and the empty vodka bottle rolls in the passenger seat next to him. He pulls up the entrance of the long abandoned hotel and cuts off the engine. He lifts the sunglasses off of his head and takes a good look at the abandoned hotel, that has now been transformed into a high-class business building with shiny panels reflecting off of it and security camera's all around the outside of the building. The "L.O.S.S" letters above the door shine brightly with neon colors, lights so bright they could almost blind him.
Kayden slowly makes his way inside the building, looking at the address he had scribbled on a napkin when he was having breakfast while watching the game back at his apartment. The cold milk from his bowl of cereal had spilled onto it when the strange girl he had brought home the night before slammed his door so hard that it caused the bowl to slip off of the coffee table and crash to the floor.
The ink had been smeared on the napkin he wrote it down on but he was sure he was in the right place. Futuristic motorcycles and fast lane sports cars were crowding the parking lot, Kayden swallowed hard as looked at all the other vehicles. He reassured himself this was what he needed to do, as he waited around inside the lobby. Pictures of the former hotel blueprints hanging on the walls were the only company he had in this place. Not a person that was in sight looked like they wanted to have a conversation with him all were either. They were too busy gossiping or rushing off into the "Staff Only" marked doors. He assumed those doors were the research rooms and other rooms as well. He contemplates signing in and talking to the woman at the registration desk, but he decides against it. Just in case he chose to go ahead and leave, the man that had called him wouldn't ever know that he had even shown up. Suddenly, a girl walks up toward him, she has a clipboard and a deep chocolate brown hair with thick-framed glasses. She is much shorter than Kayden and she also looks very child-like. She flops down on the black leather sofa and smiles at him. Kayden can smell her perfume even though he is sitting at the opposite end of the couch, it almost gives him a buzz it is so very intoxicating that its scent is so mesmerizing.
The girl gives him a halfhearted smile and he does the same, as his eyes shift to the man who just walked through the door. His goggles glisten beneath the fluorescent lights hanging overhead. The room grows quiet as he enters, the cigarette in his mouth smokes as his head turns toward Kayden stepping directly in front of him intentionally. He gives Kayden a half smirk and then he walks over to the metal door, with a number padlock next to it and a handprint scanner. Everyone is still silent as he swipes his card in the slot, types in a combination number, and places his hand on the scanner. The glowing blue light of the scanner traces over his hand print slowly. Kayden had seen one of the hand scanners before back a few years ago at one the more expensive restaurants he had been to in the City of Krone. The biggest city on this side of the world, and only a few miles away from his small apartment in the slums of the city. His eyes study how slow the light goes, and how the man's expression changes from calm to very impatient in a matter of seconds.
Once the light has finished scanning, a voice comes over the intercom. "Special Identified: Please continue through." The voice is slightly computerized but Kayden could tell that it was the voice of the man who had called him earlier that morning. As soon as the guy with the goggles steps through the door, as it slides open and closes behind him the people in the room resume their conversations and gossiping. The girl next to Kayden plays on her phone that beeps every time she receives a text message, the "clicking" of her fingertips against the screen is about all that Kayden's small amount of the patience he has that he can take.
"Can I ask you something?" Kayden asks the girl next to him, turning to face her. She sighs and blows a bubble from the gum she had been chewing the entire time.
"I guess." The girl answers the coldness in her voice could have made Kayden turn to ice. Her eyes finally look up from the screen of her phone and then immediately lock with his. Now she is staring at him, and leaning in with her body toward Kayden as she tries to scoot closer on the couch. Already stuck in his hazel eyes, like every other female he had encountered.
