Mom and Dad joke about at dinner. Sometimes Josh and Clara chime in. I don't talk much, probably because today's the last day of yard sale and I got tired moving boxes. Mom washes the dishes soon after we finish our dinner, and Dad sits on the couch and turns on the TV.
As for me, I go straight back to my room, turn on my computer, and start working on my summer assignment.
A few minutes later, I hear a knock on my door. It open to reveal Josh standing, only his head through the doorway, awkwardly. He nodded to the screen. "What's up?"
I shrug. "Homework."
"Wow. That's pretty harsh. My homeroom teacher said recent middle schools are like prisons. Listen...about what happened; please don't tell our parents about what you saw."
"What makes you think I'll do what you say?" I ask, but I mainly focus on the book report I'm doing. Reading a complete biography of Genghis Khan had been a complete torture, and the least thing that can satisfy me is to write a report based on my reading.
I faintly hear Josh moving, and settling on the edge of my bed. "Fair enough. Well, at first we–"
Ah, I deleted the wrong part. I moved my cursor to the undo button, while my eyes scan for other errors. Minding my own task is something I'm great at, and if I put all my attention on something, I can finish a lot in a short while. Then, the next paragraph will tell chapter three, his early ages…
"–and we've been dating ever since then," Josh says.
I stop, my fingers over the keys. I turn to face him. "What were you talking about again?"
"Geez!" he says in frustration. "Didn't you hear a word I say? I'm trying to–"
"You know what?" I quickly reply. "I'm not going to tell Mom and Dad. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to focus on this report."
Josh looks uncertain about whether I've got his point or not, but he slowly stands up. "Okay, then...If that's what you want."
Josh goes out of the room and closes the door. I continue working on my computer until late at night.
Actually, I couldn't care less about the two dating. I just wanted to hear Clara's plea. Clara and I don’t get along well for the most time, acting like near strangers, but she's still my sister, and I don't hate her. I think Josh being there for her might actually be a good thing for her. She's extremely introverted, and she never says much, though she does have a pain-in-the-ass attitude when it comes to 'educating' her little brother. And, after all, Josh isn't blood-related with me and Clara, or my Mom.
