I looked back at the figure in the mirror. The extra distance I had given myself from the mirror allowed me to see the figure more clearly. It was humaniod with thin grayish wisps of smoke defining its features. I couldn't tell if it was male or female but it gave the impression of an old, wise and powerful being that had seen much in its long existence.
I knew right then and there it could and would help me if I asked it but I couldn't help but wonder about the price it spoke of. What was it? Would I be able to pay it? Would I be able to live with myself if I did? I did not like these questions nor did I like not knowing the answers to them.
"What is this price, and what must I do to pay it?" I decided to ask the smoke being.
"In return for changing things here in order to keep your world from being destroyed, you must help fix things in another. The circumstances there is more complicated than here in yours I need someone who go in and set things right there. Do I need to say more?" It replied.
"No, it sounds simple enough and I can probably guess why you can't do it yourself. But....I'm betting there's a catch to being brought there, right?" I told it.
The being in the mirror stared back at me for a moment in silence before nodding its head once in confirmation of my guess.
"I knew it," I said with a sigh. "Alright then, what is it?"
It appeared to take a moment to think about what it would say before answering my question.
"It will be difficult," it began. "To take you from your world and a fair amount of my power to save it before then. I fear I will only have enough strength left over to bring you to where you need to be and no more. You will have to find your own way back when your done."
"Difficult!?" I exclaimed. "Doesn't that mean I'll be stuck there with out you?"
"No. If things go well, it will be easy for you to return to your world." it told me.
I went quiet then and thought about my situation. The decision was deceptively simple. I could choose to leave, saving my world and possibly having a grand adventure in the other or I could stay and watch my world come to a fiery end. What made it hard was the fact if I did leave, I would be leaving everything I knew to be familiar and safe for an unknown world and fate.
In all my life, I've never been one to travel very far from the home I had grown up in. At least not on my own and never for very long. But this was a chance for me to go on an adventure like I had always dreamed of. Still, it was going to be a big change for me and I was afraid I might fail. But...I...
No.
No more buts. My choice was clear. Fear or no fear, I had to go. I already knew the consequences of staying and even if I did fail, at least I would be giving my world a chance. With my decision made, I returned my attention back to the smoke being.
