Weekly Woes

Week 5

Week 5

Dec 15, 2017

The boy was jostled awake when the covered cart hit a large bump, knocking his head against the wood-paneled floor. With a groan he sat up, rubbing the sleep out of his eyes. From inside the cart, he could hear the sound of horse hooves clacking on cobblestone mixed with the busy chatter that always forms when lots of people gather in the same place.

With the sluggishness that comes with waking up, the young boy crawled to the back of the cart, pushing the loose cloth that was the back panel to the side, peering out into the bustling crowd of people. Motivated by the smell of freshly baked bread and fruity pastries he carefully jumped out of the back of the cart, letting it disappear into the crowd.

Using his nose as a guide he pushed his way through the crowd, looking for the sign that would give away bakery the marvelous smells where coming from. There! He could see it, the aged wood with a fading picture of a loaf of bread and a wheat stalk in the shape of an 'x'.

The young boy tried to push his way towards the small, stone shop from which the sign hung but the crowd had gotten dense and he soon found himself being carried away by the sea of bodies. He struggled to find a way out and around but he was carried far off, too far to smell the freshly baked bread and pastries and he was so disoriented that he was now hopelessly lost. He wandered for hours, trying to find his way back to that little bakery, the stone walkways beginning to hurt his feet, his worn-out boots pressing into the tired souls of his feet with each step. By now night was rapidly approaching and the air was beginning to cool off.

Pulling his cloak tight around him the boy kept wandering, the wind sending a chill through his entire body. He had grown weary and was ready to give up the search. It was then that he saw it, the same aged wooden sign as earlier. With newfound excitement, he surged forward, bursting through the door, startling the shopkeep who had been in the process of closing up for the night.

"Uncle I'm here!"

Prompt: Write a story that relies heavily on description and is at least 300 words.

This one is a much lower quality than my usual work, I didn't know what to write about this week and so I ended up having to put this together in an hour.
