From my experience with it, depression can be a sneaky asshole who's really good at convincing you it's intelligence. Just like Mittaines, you can end up actually liking when life sucks because at least that's a certainty and doesn't require any effort. There's also the added ego bonus that comes with thinking you're the only realist person in a world of naive idiots.
...but what a load of bullshit is that!
That's not what being smart is. Being really smart is your inner Beebee, to know that things can be bleak but that you can still make it worth living if you, for starters, don't refuse the good things life has to offer.
It's to know that "between things that sucked in the past and things that might suck in the future, there's this little thing called your life"
