Frisk opened her eyes slowly. Suddenly the lights of the lab seemed too bright. Too much. Her ears rang from the extraction.
“Hey kid, you alright?”
Sans walked over to the bed they had laid Frisk on. Despite all that had happened to her Frisk had a gentle soul, and the process had knocked her unconscious
Frisk smiled at Sans.
“A bit of a headache, but besides that i'm good. Remind me to never sign up for a DT extraction. That would be way worse than having Chare pulled out…”
Suddenly Frisk looked around.
“Where is Chara? Did it work? Are they ok?”
Sans laughed. “All great questions to ask me, but why don’t you ask her yourself?”
Frisk was about to ask Sans what he meant when Chara walked through the door. She was dressed in simple jeans and a long shirt, striped on the chest like Frisks, but green with yellow stripes. She had a hesitant step, testing out legs she hadn’t had used in over a 20 years.
“Welp, i'm going to Grillby's. I’ll bring you two a couple of drinks.”
Frisk whipped toward Sans.
“No wait don’t go!”
But Sans was already gone.
Frisk slowly looked back over at Chara. She walked the rest of the way over to Frisks bed and sat down on the foot of the bed.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
Chara shifted.
“So….I guess i have a body now?” She said, giving her new arms a shrug.
Frisk laughed.
“You get a body, after more than 20 years, and all you have to say is ‘I guess i have a body now?”
Chara grinned. “Yep.”
“You have no sense of drama.”
Chara shook her head. “I have a wonderful sense of drama. I also have a wonderful sense of humor,”
Frisk thought about that for a moment.
“I have a way for you to prove it.”
Chara tilted her head in a question.
“Never try to be as funny as Sans.”
Chara laughed. “But Frisk, now that I have a body i can show how much I Chara-bout you!.”
A chuckled echoed through the room from nowhere.
“That’s how you do it kid!”
Chara and Frisk gave each other a long look.
“Shut up Sans! “ They chorused, before bursting into a mixture of laughter and tears.
***
Frisk glanced for the hundredth time at Chara. After having her in her head for so long made this very odd, actually seeing her.
She had shoulder length light brown hair, the same color as Frisks. Her eyes were a deep red, much darker than the bright red Frisk’s had been while possessed. In height, they were exactly the same, which Frisk knew meant that Chara was 5’1. Just a little taller than Sans.
She was real. That Frisk could tell by the crumpling of the sheets, and the air she had felt when she had sat down.
“What’s it like, being human again?”
Chara smiled at Frisk’s question. It was the first one she had expected.
“It’s…. Odd. for so long I existed as merely a thought. Not able to move, or even think very well. Then you came along, and i kind of… latched on. What was left of me sensed the life that seemed to emanate from you. Your soul is very powerful. I merely watched, amazed by the acts of kind selflessness i saw from you. Then on, what, your third reset? You sensed me. You actually addressed me, as a person. And for the first time in 20 years, I responded.
“I told you my Name.”
Frisk nodded. She remembered that day. She had felt the second set of thoughts behind her own, and asked a simple question: ‘What are you?’
“After that, we slowly became closer, as you know. I told you almost everything about my family, and you told me what you knew about the state of the underground, as well as showing me yourself.
“But over time, your soul began to affect me. It caused me to start to be more controlling, urging you to be less kind, until…”
Tears welled in the corners of Chara’s eyes.
“That last reset, something snapped. I took control of you, and….”
Chara began sobbing. After a moment of hesitation, Frisk pulled her into a hug.
“Chara, it’s ok. You didn’t harm anyone. Everyone is safe and sound. It’s going to be alright.”
Slowly, Chara’s sobs stopped, and she sank into unconsciousness.
