Gotta go FAST! Take a slow, snuffly mammal – DYE IT BLUE, GIVE IT SHOES, MAKE IT FAST! FIGHT A MAN-EGG: AN EGGMAN! CHAOS (emeralds)! GOLDEN RINGS! AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!
This is Sonic the Hedgehog.
–Verdict–
Art: This is one of the most iconically vibrant pixel art platformers I know. The character models are sleek and smooth, and the usage of eye-melting neon somehow fits the scene perfectly. A lot of love went into making this game as bubbly as it is.
Gameplay: Tape the forward arrow down, and go as fast as you can. Always. Move. Right. Except for loop-the-loops.
To be honest, though, I much prefer deliberate platforming, like in a Mario game or LittleBigPlanet, where you focus more on the quality of the jump over the speed of getting there. That to me affords the ability to go for a speedrun if you’d like but also the sense of accomplishment of completing a difficult jumping trial. I never really feel that in Sonic, where instead I focus on the blazing speed over a well-though-out platforming trick.
Replayability: The game looks as good as it did when it came out. The gameplay, however, feels a little “slow”. And I don’t mean speed-wise: it just feels like Sega has done the same exact formula for so long now that the original just doesn’t have the same timelessness to it anymore. I can go back to SMB3 anytime and still feel nostalgic – but this one just makes me feel too old to enjoy the game anymore.
Would I recommend? If you have kids, and want to teach them platforming with an approachable game, this might be the one. If you’re looking to relive your childhood, this might do it for you. If you want to play Sonic back when the art was alive and kicking, give this a go. Any other situation you might want to play a platformer – I’d say pass. There are better speed demons out there nowadays.

I love Sonic, especially the originals, but I agree about the platforming and speed. There are many different paths to take, and I love taking my time to explore and collect everything, so in a game like this, if you miss something it's gone. I'd assume that completing the game and doing some kind of thing where you 100% everything would mean going slow and backtracking. like, a lot.
