A continuation of Quickening Racecar AU, but a bit into the future.

Context: ten years ago, when Yvette was 15 and Cain was 16, Yvette developed an interest in sports car racing. This helped Yvette to decide in pursuing engineering, designing engines for sports cars and such. Cain, who had a crush on Yvette back then, planned on becoming a history major, but after graduating, he instead went into sports car racing to impress Yvette, thus becoming the best racer in history. Yvette resents Cain for that. Now, Engr Dr Shelley, who has a doctorate in engineering too (lol), offers Yvette a place in his lab to continue her apprenticeship. Yvette wants to take up the offer, because she could pursue a Master’s in engineering from that, but is reluctant about it. Cain learns of this and goes to confront Yvette.

Here is a snippet I've written for it:

Yvette turns her head to Cain, who’s looking at her too earnestly and too close for comfort. She leans away.

"This isn’t your problem, Sforza. You’re a god here. You’ve got them all wrapped around your finger. Why should you leave?"

"It doesn’t matter, Yvette," Cain says, "the only reason I’m here is you. And if you leave, then that goes for me, too."

It isn’t easy, but Cain makes all things seem easy. Yvette hates him for that. Once, she would’ve admired him for it, but that was ten years ago. She grew up; Cain did, too. And now adulthood placed them in different positions, with Yvette finding it difficult to reconcile between then and now. Yvette stopped filling the chasm between them years ago, but Cain never stopped reaching for her hand.

Yvette sighs, closes her eyes.

"Yvette," Cain murmurs, breath close.
