There was a bit of confusion in the comments about the number on Charlie's jumper - it's a birthday badge! Do people outside the UK not have birthday badges haha? It's Charlie's 15th's birthday party so he's wearing a birthday badge with '15' on it :)

In my opinion Tao is thinking that Nick and Charlie are "just friends", but he knows Charlie's feelings for Nick and don't know that it reciprocal, so he's worried that his friend would be hurt by that "all straight guy". Charlie told Nick that Tao's rude, so I don't think he's just being an ass neither they have a toxic relationship, he can be a jerk for how he talks, but not because he dislike Nick I think that he just don't know everything and/or thinking Nick is just playing with his friend.
Charlie, a highly-strung, openly gay over-thinker, and Nick, a cheerful, soft-hearted rugby player, meet at a British all-boys grammar school. Friendship blooms quickly, but could there be something more...?
