"Somebody help!" Audrey screamed. "Somebody, anybody! HELP!" She screamed again. She screamed until her throat became dry and raw from the sudden overuse of the muscle. And then she screamed again.
Nobody came. And so, Audrey Collins died on the peak of Heaven's Hill.
Three months later I stood where she died. My cold hands curled in my trench coat as a low rumble of clouds brought the beginnings of a winter rain.
"What a mess." I said clicking my tongue. "Sure, this part of the trail was closed off from the rest of the park, but did no one seriously think to check here?" I turned to my partner.
"There are so many trails here, it's impossible to search all of them." Drew said with a shrug.
"I found it easily enough." I pulled my hands out of my pocket and risked the blistering winter air to light a cigarette.
"Well, that's because, you're you." Drew replied.
I took a long drag before speaking. "That's for sure."
Three hours later, we were in the Coroner's office. Collins' mother clung desperately to my arm like a new born chimpanzee. She cried and spread her cheap makeup all over my jacket. I pushed her off like she was something that came from the back side of an animal. My sleeve now had a mixture of reds, blues, and blacks stained into it.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Davidson." She said with a new batch of tears rolling down her cheeks. Drew handed her a box of tissues. "I just can't believe it." She blew her nose loudly.
I rolled my eyes. This woman's fake denial was giving me a migraine and turning my clothes into terrible Picasso replications. "Listen Lady, You can cut the crap."
She froze. Her eyes blinked a few times like they were all out of tears, but still forced to perform. "I.. I.. Don't know what you mean," She said sniffling and dabbing her face. "I just can't believe my baby is gone!"
"We saw in the case file you haven't seen Collins in over two years, and you had a solid alibi the night she died. We just needed you to identify the body." I pressed my lips into a fine line after I spoke. I could use a smoke break and a hammer to hit my head with. Somehow, the pain would be less than what I was feeling now.
"Oh," She said, her shoulders suddenly slumped and she looked around the room awkwardly. "So, I am not under arrest." She asked eagerly.
"No," I said pinching the bridge of my nose. I squeezed my eyes shut. Maybe if think of my bed hard enough, I'll be in it.
"Oh, I see." She suddenly grabbed my arm and squeezed it. My eyes shot open and I jerked away from her.
"What the hell?! Get off me!" I shouted and she let go of me just as quickly as she tried to hold me.
"Sorry, you have a nice build and I thought I would give it a shot." She grinned and I looked at her with disgust. She looked like Trash Barbie. The one never sold in stores because if it were real, every child would cry when they saw it.
"Get out of my office!" I roared. She scampered out of the room.
"Uh, Harley." Drew said after a beat.
"What," I groaned.
"This isn't your office."
"Shut up, Drew."
"Yes, Sir."

Not the way I would have ended it, but I was running out of time and I already gave myself an extra 15 minutes. Hope you liked it. Almost forgot a fun fact! In Disney's Fantasia, The Sorcerer's name is Yensid, which is Disney backwards!
