It was high noon. Harsh rays of sun streaked in from narrow windows high in the walls and bounced off of all the smooth, dull metal furniture in a small square room. This made the room seem extremely harsh and lifeless. The ceilings were low and dome shaped. This room was in the Central barracks right in the centre of Alena City. The Central Barracks were the largest of the Barracks and the most well fortified. When Celeste arrived at the Central Barracks with her parents, she studied the hallways and entrances. She wanted to note all the escape routes as early as possible. By the time they had walked into the square room, she had realized just how secure the Barracks were. The passages were narrow and all led to one entry area. The building itself was low on the ground and extended underground. It was supposed to double as a bunker in case of emergencies. Once, when Alena city was much smaller, the Enforcement bunkers could have held all of the citizens comfortably. At the current population however, that would be impossible.
Celeste shifted uncomfortably at the low round ceilings. She was short, so the ceiling wasn't that close to her but the curve made her feel claustrophobic. The room only had three chairs. One chair was a tall, hard back chair behind a metallic desk. A woman equally as short as Celeste sat on the hard back chair. She had introduced herself as 'Enforcement Officer Vivienne' with a commanding low voice. She sat back in the chair looking at Celeste's parents who took up the other two shorter chairs. Celeste was left to stand behind her parents like a guard. They had both insisted on coming; in Alena City, it was considered an honor to have a child enrolled in Enforcement.
"We are extremely proud to have Celeste join the fight to defend our country," Owen Sidman said to Vivienne. Owen outranked Viviene but he seemed a little nervous when he spoke to her. The night before Celeste had overheard Owen express his worry that the council wouldn't be able to convince Enforcement to enlist Celeste. Celeste, on the other had, was hoping that Alenian snobbery would finally be good for something and they would reject her application. Vivienne eyed Celeste in slight disgust, she didn't even bother to hide it. "May the Creator favour those who create and burn those who bring destruction," Vivienne quoted a line from the religious texts of Creation. "From what I read in the reports last week, your daughter brings trouble with her from those outer cities." Vivienne folded her arms and turned her attention to Scarlett challenging her to defend Celeste. "It wasn't Celeste's fault," Scarlett countered. Vivienne snorted at Scarlett's weak argument.
"They say that the outer cities, are lawless. They say... some Citizens interact with Outlanders on a regular basis," Vivienne glared at Celeste. "Those are ridiculous rumors," Owen was surprised at the accusation. Vivienne ignored him and kept her eye contact with Celeste. "Did your 'friend' also visit you in your savage Serenity city?"
The ringing of metal cut the tension as Scarlett slammed her fist onto the desk. "Oh, Forgive me. I went too far," Vivienne's apology was insincere and she did nothing to hide that fact. "If it were up to me, your daughter wouldn't even dream of joining Enforcement," Vivienne paused, "but, its not up to me. Today, I am forced to enlist the worst recruit I have ever come across!" This was not the enrollment that Owen was hoping for but he took it as a victory. He jumped up and hugged his daughter knocking his chair back. Vivienne shook her head in disapproval. "You are not worth that military grade robot they assigned to babysit you!" Vivienne kicked her seat back in anger. "What a bloody waste of council resources!" Vivienne was a tornado heading out of the door.
As she left Celeste's heart sank. A robot guard was assigned to her. This was not just about some vendetta that she had against robots like Hudson. Military grade robots could detect the use of magic. All hopes of escape left Celeste. Owen was of course excited about the military grade robot. He excitedly talked about it with his wife but Celeste didn't hear any of it. Her head was spinning; She was stuck in a fort, surrounded by Enforcement Officers and now she was the prisoner of a Military Robot. The worst part was despite Vivienne's insults and how much Celeste hate her already, Celeste wished Vivienne did have her way.
